I believe...

...in epiphanies.

On May second of last year, I, along with 20 of my peers, departed from the Narita Airport in Tokyo. Stuffed between four other people in my tiny airplane recliner, I prepared myself for what would soon be the longest day of my life. Prior to the 13 hour flight back to California, our gracious tour guide expressed in broken English that for us, May second would exceed the normal twenty four hour mark by about two thirds. I recalled the enthusiasm my friends and I felt upon hearing the news of our extended day.

I felt the rumble of the engines as we gained altitude. The majestic country that had welcomed us only weeks before, was hidden beneath dense cloud cover.

I closed my eyes. Had I really just spent two weeks in a foreign country with 20 other students from my high school? Had I really lived with a Japanese family and communicated more with my body language than with words?

I opened my eyes and looked at the glowing monitor in the headrest in front of me.
