Create and Destroy: A Junior Self-Portrait Illustration by Nathan Becker (2011)

For my self-portrait illustration, I symbolically represented my perfectionism, simultaneously demonstrating its positive and negative aspects. In my self-portrait, there is a hand drawing a perfect circle with a pencil. The circle, an abstract representation of perfection, represents my ability to produce nearly faultless work. The circle is in the process of being sketched and is not quite complete, showing how I never feel like my work it complete. The circle doubles as a clock, representing time itself. Another hand is smashing the clock with a mallet, and the clock is cracked in numerous places. The hand gripping the mallet represents the frustration and anger that I am often overcome with when working on projects. The cracked clock demonstrates the valuable time that is wasted worrying about petty details. The upper half of the background, where the hand is sketching the circle, is lined paper. The perfect pattern of parallel, horizontal lines fits with the flawless, positive aspect of my character trait. The lower half of the background, behind the hand holding the mallet, is a dark, black pattern that is meant to convey the aggravation that comes along with my perfectionism.
