Nowhere: A Junior Narrative Diptych by Camila Sol (2012)

A man spends a quarter of his life preparing for the future. He goes through preschool, kindergarten, middle school, high school, then finally college all in the hope that by the end he will know exactly what he wants to do with his life. This uncertainty terrifies him. especially with a degree in liberal arts. He has the freedom to explore and create his own career path but is ultimately weighed down by his fear of the future. This fear stems from a seemingly endless number of paths in life that he is able to take, yet unable to see the end of. He is distraught over the fact that one path might have the ability to bring out his greatest potential, while another has the ability to turn his life into a boring, mundane chore. He is most frustrated by the amount of possibilities in his life which he is unable to settle on. In the diptych, one side shows a row of boats sitting on the side of a loading dock. This represents how life can present itself in a variety of opportunities. The other side shows the vast landscape of the bay from the view of a dock. The depth and uncertainty of the ocean is similar to the depth and uncertainty of the future. One boat might take you exactly where you need to go, while another might make you end up hopelessly lost. In the end, the ambiguity of these possibilities will cause some to remain stuck at the shore.
