Big Decision: A Senior Profile Portrait by Camille Siegel (2011)

Bailey Sadler was three-years-old when she started playing soccer. An extraordinarily talented child, she had shown talent far beyond her years at such a young age. Her father was a retired soccer player as well, and had played for the Dutch team in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. When she was 6, her parents tragically passed away in a car accident on the way to one of her games. Her aunt and uncle took custody of her, and though they were supportive, the pressure to continue soccer was constantly there. By the time Bailey was twelve she felt that she did not want to pursue the sport any more, but her uncle told her it would be a disgrace to her father's name if she quit. This guilt trip continued for thirteen more years. Bailey played soccer throughout high school and college, and she was drafted to a professional team. In this photo, Bailey is finally coming to terms with the fact that soccer makes her unhappy. She is struggling with the decision to defy her uncle's constant guilt trips and quit the sport that she has played her entire life. In the photo, Bailey is contemplating the decision to quit playing soccer. She's wearing her uniform, signifying both how she is always stuck playing soccer, but also how she has always been put under strict rules to keep her life in line for the purposes of soccer. A cooling filter was put on the photo to add a tone of sorrow, while the vignette was placed around her to emphasize the feeling of being trapped and alone in a lifestyle she hates.
