The Candy Jar: A Junior Self-Portrait Illustration by Emma Orner (2012)

The artwork displays a single pristine clock inside of a cookie jar while littered with broken clocks around the jar. The picture represents my impending fear of being late, making me constantly stressed with time and arriving punctually. This irritates my family to a point where I am scratching at their patience. I have used up most of their tolerance which is represented in the broken clocks. The singular clock in the jar depicts the little tolerance they do have left. While the broken clocks littered around the jar signify the tolerance I have already used. Because there is only one clock left, it has made me be more careful when stressing my family about time. I try to save the little I have left and cherish it since I have no more.

Creating the clocks in Illustrator proved to be a challenge for me, but I soon found the work fun and often entertaining. Because the program works with shapes, it was often difficult to show lighting on objects and create a sense of depth to the photos. My main goal of the project was to focus on the lighting of the pictures and make it seem more real than cartoony. To do this, small shapes of lighter colors were used to depict the image of the sun's reflection upon a surface.
