Miss the Mark: A Junior Self-Portrait Illustration by Savannah Swan (2012)

In this project, we were asked to choose an internal conflict and external conflict that we see in ourselves. I chose my internal conflict as a lack of confidence and an external conflict as having talent. I chose these because I love to sing and this year, I made it into the highest and most respected choir in Los Altos High School, Main Street Singers. Not only being an audition group, they are know world wide for the talent and poise. I can't believe I made it into this group and I still wake up everyday wondering how I did it. This brings me to my internal conflict: a lack of confidence. I question how I did it and what possessed the instructor to let me have a chance in this choir. Both these conflicts inspired this illustration.

Taking my love of art, bright colors and music, I made this photo. Starting from left to right in the back are posters on the wall with the bands Of Monsters and Men and Florence and the Machine, then my favorite singer, Adele. I put those in the background to show my love of music. The mass of stars on the ground that looks like crumpled paper in supposed to symbolize myself, not ''making it'' into the music industry, hidden in the shadows. The trash can with all the wonderful music notes, colors, flowers and the Broadway street sign coming out of it with light shinning from behind it depicts the awe of that whole other world.
