The Hands of Time: A Junior Self-Portrait Illustration by Stephen Adams (2012)

In my illustration I have a finger. It is trying to press a button but has hands holding it back from doing so. Each hand represents something internal that holds me back. In the background there is a vortex of sorts representing time. There is also a clock in the background that helps represent life passing by. These come together to show my desire to achieve my goals, and the conflict this has with my indecisive nature when it comes to actually following through. Originally my idea was different; it still had to do with pressing a button of sorts, but I was not sure how to picture that, after we split up into groups in design to discuss the idea, my group helped me figure this out. In the end this piece demonstrates my life in a nutshell: big goals, combated by large amounts of indecisiveness. In terms of risks, I didn't do a whole lot that is really outside the box unless you count symbolism as that, the idea of almost personifying my inner faults might be a little bit different than usual.

Technically, I used Illustrator to create the piece, often times creating the graphics in separate files and putting them into the master canvas for more efficiency. The main challenges I faced in making the illustration were my lack of natural drawing talent, and the challenge of using a new computer program. I was able to gain knowledge about how to use the program from teachers and fellow students. I now have skills that I can use throughout my life, especially for job opportunities.
