Near Life Experience: A Senior Mise en Scene Illustration by Dean Rossi (2013)

This piece depicts your average high school student, Derek. In an attempt to escape the ridicule of mediocrity from his family, he storms out of his house and into the familiar streets of his town. When he wishes that his suffering would end, Death presents an unexpected opportunity. While crossing the street, a driver appears as if out of nowhere. In an instant, he is killed. The downfall of our main character became the subject of my Mise en Scene.

The composition of the piece is meant to emphasize his depression. The desaturation represents a bleak look upon the world. In addition, motion blur was added to emphasize the blow of the impact. Combining several elements results in the poor plight of Derek. Fortunately, Death has given him a chance to redeem his life again, but not before the car strikes him down.
