Lava Monster: A Senior Surreal Photo by Andres Raygada (2013)

At the beginning of the surrealism unit, we had a professional photographer come in and teach us how to take HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos. HDR photography is something you can use to make pictures look slightly unrealistic, or surreal. In order to do this kind of photography, you must take three photos of the same object/scene, and take them using three different exposures - dark, normal, and light - and you MUST use a tripod so that each photo is steady. Then you edit the photo in photoshop. For this unit, we had to create a dreamlike picture, combining HDR with other textures. In this photo, I am standing in the middle of the street at night, sleep walking next to hot lava. I named this piece Lava Monster because they don't exist, other than in this dream.
