Abandoned Reflection: A Junior Self-Portrait Diptych by Dean gustafson (2013)

For the first side, or the left side of my diptych I chose to take a photo of an abandon pool, hence the name Abandon Reflection. My personal poem that I wrote connects to this in the lines, ''It traps you in your mind for a seemingly infinite time''. In my poem I describe my mind when i'm swimming as empty or ''abandoned'' by my own thoughts. The photo also connects to my poem quite literally because it is a pool.

For my second photo on the right side, I chose to take a very colorful shot of trees in my dads car mirror. I chose this specifically because it really called for me right before I took the photo. I saw how it connected to my poem because like my poem, It reflects images just like the surface of the pool. Although the overall message of my poem was that you can handle more than you think, I believe that my diptych took on its own theme. This theme being that many of us cannot own up to our actions and instead abandon them, but should instead look in the mirror and make changes to become something better and be happy to see our own reflection.

Both of my photos connect because they convey similar themes. The pool has murky water in it that is rectangular in shape and also the mirror is rectangular. They have parallel lines which gives the spectator a sense of similarity between the photos. They have contrasting colors which really makes the photos stand out from one and other as well
