Split River: A Junior Self-Portrait Illustration by Jodi DeMassa (2013)
The thorny roses and lemons came from my backyard in my personal essay. The bread came from my church reference. My friend re-introduced me to a Lutheran Church when we were in fifth grade. He and I would talk there instead of school.
I split the bread, lemons, and roses to symbolize lost contact with my friend. The thorny roses represent shun and the lemons represent my friend’s sour situation without his grandparents.
