Mute: A Junior Conceptual Project by Christian Rodriguez (2015)

I am exploring the feeling of Reluctance through the experience of Making Music. For the conceptual unit, in our Design class we were assigned the task of creating conceptual art using the statement above (the areas in quotes were chosen from two bags at random). This project had to be mixed-media, which included a fine art and digital art. For my fine art I chose to use watercolor to paint a hummingbird. Then, I used Adobe Photoshop to cut it out. Finally, I added a background and a rope or string around the hummingbird’s beak in Adobe Illustrator.

When I was thinking of ideas for my conceptual piece, I was thinking of what kind of things make music. First I thought that humans made music, but Ms. Parkinson helped me realize how that was too simple, and that it needed to be something less obvious. I finally decided that birds also make music, and that was a bit less obvious. I had the music part with the hummingbird, but I still needed the reluctance. I realized that if the bird had something around its beak then it would not be able to make any noise and it would show how the hummingbird is reluctant. That is why I believe my art shows reluctance through making music.
