Scoreboard: A Junior Conceptual Project by Andrew Gentile (2015)

I am exploring the feeling of defeat through the experience of eating new food. My fine art medium was a watermelon with blue food coloring, with the watermelon acting as a canvas. The digital mediums that I used were Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. In the digital mediums, I added an infinity symbol and the number zero to the tops of the watermelons. Also, I modified the grass, by blurring it and dulling down its color.

My art expresses my concept because the image of a blue watermelon represents new food. Meanwhile, the numbers on top of the watermelons represent the defeat itself, as if both were a scoreboard (the infinity symbol being the winning score, the number zero to represent the losing score). Please note that the watermelon with the winning score is in the foreground to represent success while the watermelon with the losing score is in the background, representing defeat. The watermelon with the winning score is yellow because the color yellow is usually associated with success. The watermelon with the losing score is red because the color red represents anger, hate, and (in some cases) defeat. Added on top of this metaphor is the image of the gray grass, to represent the sadness and bleakness of defeat in the eyes of those defeated.
