Eyes of Envy: A Junior Conceptual Project by Angelica D'Augusta (2015)

I am exploring the feeling of envy through the experience of standing up for myself. For this piece of work, my incorporated fine art was a painting that I had created using water colors. I was able to mix two different shades of green, along with pink, to make them darker and lighter with white and black. I attempted to make it have a tie dye effect where the colors would be fading into one another. Water color paint specifically helped make this happen by being able to blend the colors easily into one another. My digital medium was a photo I had taken of green items surrounding a pink one in the center. I made sure to take the photo on a white background so then I could crop out the background and place it on top of my fine art.

I chose the color green as my prominent color because I feel that it easily represents the feeling of envy. I made it fade to pink because it is green’s complimentary color and I think it personally is a connection to my personality. I made sure to make the green start the fade dark, representing the outside world to be dark and deep with envy while the pink gets lighter in the center showing when standing up for oneself, you are more at ease with yourself. The point of my items in the photograph was to show different things that are green, representing others being envious of you because you are able to stand up for yourself. All of the items are green but different shades showing different levels of envy and different styles. The pink item in the center is surrounded by a band that is pink with green text that says Be Strong. The text really helps as a literal metaphor to stay strong but the band represents a protective wall. Choosing the angle I did for the photo really allowed the items to be given more dimension which I really liked how it looked. Lastly, I think the order that the items are placed and the feeling they all give is somewhat childish which to me is a very important time for people to learn to stand up for themselves and also where many kids are judgmental of one another.
