Waiting for Before: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Josef Orner (2015)

In my picture I have paper cranes pinned in a circle around a lit candle. The paper cranes are literally pinned together by their wings, which shows how they aren't able to leave. I placed everything on a blue mat because I was trying to invoke a form of melancholy in my photo. In the center of the circle, the candle's wax is slowly spreading out around the cranes.

I learned how to view photos in raw and edit them there first before pulling them into Photoshop. This allowed me to color grade my photo to bring out the desired emotions from the colors. I tried using different colors over the top of my photo and was trying to see what color I liked the most. I ended up liking the use of the blues and purples over my photo the most. I also learned what a vignette was for the first time and was able to incorporate it into my photo in order to pull attention towards the center of my photo. My photo was trying to express the feeling of scorn through the event of a disaster. I tried to show an object of beauty, the cranes, trapped around a candle which slowly melts towards them. The wax is slowly coming towards the paper, which will eventually soak into the paper and destroy the cranes.
