The Sprout That Sprouted Sprouts: A Junior Visual Narrative Comic by Jennifer Vieyra (2016)

My comic strip story is about a group of plants at a farm house during spring. The main character would be the first sprout that is shown with the other plants. That sprout is initially very happy with what's going on but then realizes that he is all alone so he attempts to talk to all the other plants; leading to failure. Because he is so small, no one else has regards towards him and he is ignored. Because of this he is saddened and begins to cry causing other underdeveloped sprouts to be able to grow and become his friends. In the end he is happily there with all his new friends who are exactly like him.

The entire process began with me sketching the farmhouse and walls with linear perspective so that the drawings would look more 2D than they would be if I had just left them there. One of the main difficulties I encountered was that most of my panels had less linear perspective needed to be incorporated so I had to find a way to include it at least in the slightest. When I was first sketching my drawings onto my graph paper I wanted the panels to have different shapes than usual. For example my second third and fourth panels are elongated to show that the flower is much longer than the sprout itself, giving the audiences a view of what the sprout was experiencing. After sketching everything out I went over it all with a burnisher to allow a better image of what I was sketching over onto a separate piece of paper. When finished I took a picture of the entire board from my phone using Genius Scan, later allowing me to upload it onto Illustrator. After this I had slight trouble showing the gradient of the light from the sun onto the walls of the barnhouse. I overcame this by attempting to show more linear perspective on the flower pot. If I were to do things differently, I would have changed the settings g of my comic so that I could add more details to the comic. I feel as though if it was set inside, I would have been able to add more gradients and line work.
