Ashwini Srivatsan: A Senior Profile Portrait by Radhika Gupta (2015)
The star of my profile is Ashwini Srivatsan, an established dancer based in San Jose. Though she has trained in several dance forms, everything from Contemporary to Kathak, Srivatsan is especially drawn to Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form that dates back to 200 BCE. Srivatsan is currently the founder and creative head of Kanha School of Dance, a company that is committed to preserving and creating a name for Bharatnatyam in the Bay Area.
This photograph was taken outside of Ashwini’s home. My biggest struggle with this was the background. It might not seem like such a big deal now but when you’re looking at all the photos you’ve taken and you keep noticing a fence cutting through someone’s head, it starts to be a problem. This was my first time shooting and editing in RAW which was exciting! I thought photoshop could do a lot (it can!) but shooting in RAW opens up truly endless possibilities. I really enjoy photography so this project was a lot of fun for me. I still have a lot to learn as a photographer but I’m very happy with how this piece turned out.
