Conceptual: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Christian Lanni (2017)

I am exploring the feeling of confusion through the experience of dancing.

To explore feelings of confusion in my photograph, I brought together toy soldiers painted with reggae colors and common household items. The purpose for the toy soldiers was to bring a sense of war. So as to not sound cliche, dancing was connected to war, giving purpose to the soldiers. By spray painting them bright colors, a sense of confusion arises from the viewer, Toy soldiers, in battle with one another, are painted colors representing peace and joy. The household items used contributed to the confusion, with war happening in the home, a place of safety. I used bright light, coming from a certain angle to cast a shadow on the soldiers.

The toy soldiers contributing to a dance of war painted a range of colors creates confusion for the viewer. With clashing ideas all being portrayed in one photo, the viewer must take a second glance after considering the differing ideas shown. Because having a dancer in the photo would be cliche for conceptual art, I chose to use battle as a symbol of dancing. For this photo, I achieved a better understanding of making selections, and of contrast. I had to edit many of the soldiers, brightening them so the viewer can better see them. I also had to add contrast to some of the green soldiers, especially the ones in the shadows, however, I had less success with contrast. I also used what I learned about cropping, to make the photo more concentrated on the battle itself.
