Inked: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Amanda Chan (2017)

I am exploring the feeling of remorse through contemplating the unknown.

I placed the bowl off center with the black paint overtaking about a third of the frame to show “the unknown” and create an intimidating feeling for my audience. I liked the differences in textures that the focused band aid provided against the cracked surface of a smooth bowl and thick paint. I also wanted to make sure that a crack was visible in the picture to show that the bowl was in fact broken and that it was trying to be fixed with band aids, but it was an unsuccessful attempt because the black fluid is still flowing through and over the bowl.

The objects I have in my picture are a broken bowl fixed with band aids, as well as black paint seeping through and out of the bowl. I chose to represent the concept of guilt and remorse through the broken bowl being “fixed” by band aids. The band aids better represented guilt and remorse than actually fixing a broken bowl with a stronger adhesive because it ties into the fact that no matter what somebody does, they’ll never truly be able to fix what was broken. The black liquid seeping out of the bowl is representative of “the unknown” aspect of my concept statement, as it’s unclear what the substance actually is.
