Migration: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Shirwille Gutierrez (2017)

I am exploring the feeling of skepticism through the experience of traveling to someplace new.

In my photo, I have a foreign newspaper, a glass of milk turning green and a glass bottle of milk. The bottle of milk and glass of milk both sit on top of the foreign newspaper. The newspaper is positioned just so that you can barely see the words Literature written on it. I did this to portray how when traveling to someplace new, their literature is an essential part to their culture which we learn and embrace when going there. I chose to use a glass bottle of milk because typically foreign countries still use glass bottles instead of cartons to carry milk. I tried my best to keep as little of the background as I could, but I ended with some of the concrete showing on the top corner. I also tried to make it seem as though darkness is creeping very slowing towards the center. The conceptual statement which I received from English is being exemplified within my photo. I tried to portray skepticism by creating a discoloration in the glass of milk. I also used the foreign newspaper to portray the experience of traveling to someplace new.

In Photoshop, I had to adjust the temperature of the photo in Camera Raw to try not to make the photo as cool. I then tried to make the photo brighter by adjusting the contrast and the black and whites. I then added a vignette and opened it in Photoshop to add some more edits. In Photoshop, I burned the photo in an inverse ellipse pattern to make it seem as though the darkness is creeping toward the center. Using the blur tool, I blurred the words in the ads, I thought that if I kept them in focus it could skew the meaning of the photo.
