The purpose of the Senior Innovator Project is use your own passion to innovate, create, and develop your own project.

Project Proposal

It all started with me watching a documentary late at night. I was looking around the internet about the word “brony” because I’ve never heard it before and the only thing that popped into my head was “grown men who call themselves ‘bro-ponies’ because they like a little girl's’ show”. When I found a documentary titled “Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony”, I became fond of it and decided to watch it. After it was over, I learned so much about bronies that I questioned myself if I was a brony. It turns out, I am and I am not a brony. I’m someone who enjoys the fan art that bronies create and I’m someone who’s passionate about contributing to the brony community. However, I’m also someone that isn’t overly obsessed with the show, nor doesn’t believe that My Little Pony is everything. For example, I don’t own My Little Pony merchandise, nor do I actually watch the show. The only thing I like about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is the unique attention it has to itself and the animation art style. I chose this idea to make a Christian My Little Pony screenplay because before I came to Freestyle, I had a small voice inside of me that said, “do it”. I felt as if by doing this, I’m essentially breaking the barrier between masculinity and femininity and I’m introducing a new line of fan work for the brony community. After learning how to be a screenwriter in Freestyle, that’s where I had the idea of building the foundation for my educational film. A screenplay dedicated for God’s glory.

Project Reflection

From my research process, I learned that bronies are people that literally want to celebrate My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’s themes, characters, and ideas as a community. Furthermore, bronies can be any kind of person, not just male adults. In addition, there are people that may dislike bronies because of liking a little girl’s show, but because of these put-downs, bronies are stronger people in the sense that they obey My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’s morals on friendship and harmony and they stick together as a community to combat any wrong doings towards other fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The research lend meaning to my process of developing my project by providing my insight of stepping into the shoes of what it’s like to be a brony and to make fan work for the community. The relationship between my research and the outcome of my project was somewhat related. Although I wasn’t researching for Christian fan works on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, the research about the show itself and bronies helped me establish an image of what it’s like to be in the world of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

I collaborated with others by having them read over my script out loud. What was unsuccessful about that collaboration was the amount of available people there was for my table reads. Since the seniors at Freestyle are so caught up in their projects, none of them had free time to help me out with table reads. Not only that, but I also collaborated with others by having them help me put together a teaser trailer and a poster for my project. What was successful about that collaboration was that I was able to produce excellent pieces of content with their assistance in design and voice acting.

If I could restart the project, I would designate people with table reads, instead of just doing invitations. The reason why is because I need table reads in order to create a great screenplay, so by talking to people individually, I would be able to make a schedule with them and plan dates as to when the next table read is happening. I would also give myself more time with planning out the whole story of the film before writing the screenplay. The reason is because I had more time in writing than planning. If I had more time with planning, then I would be able to create an even better story with deeper insight.

The 21st century skills that I improved upon the most are Teaming and Collaboration and Risk Taking. Reason being those is that I was always someone who hardly talks to anyone who isn’t “known” to me. Plus, I hardly took challenges that seemed too hard or were not interesting enough for me. Through Freestyle, I was able to gain that social part of my personality and take challenges that really paid off in the end. The 21st century skills that I improved upon the least are Technological Literacy and Creativity. Since I knew how to manage technology before hand and I didn’t have to put as much creative stuff as possible into my screenplay, those were the two that I least improved upon.

Some other experiences I’ll put to use in the future are working with a huge team for a film and directing them with the screenplay created at Freestyle. Since I’ve written the foundation of my educational film at Freestyle, that’ll force me to practice the other aspects of creating a film, such as directing, editing, and music production.

I feel that I innovated my own education this semester by putting myself into problems that force myself to gain education that will be useful for me to utilize later on in life. Whenever I make something, I research it first, and then I get to work on doing what I want to do.

I value this project a lot because every time I’m given time to create something big and awesome, I take advantage of it and make something that comes from my own creativity and imagination.
