Introduction

The Documentary unit challenges us to creatively and truthfully portray a person, group, or an idea. For the Junior Documentary Project, students will portray an intriguing person, group, place, idea, or issue, gathering primary and secondary research sources to develop a distinct perspective about their subject’s significance in the community and/or world. The research-based paper from English serves as the copy for the magazine article in Design and a film, commercial, and website. This unit emphasizes narrative-style journalism.

My documentary project, however was severely altered by my limitations from the COVID-19 pandemic causing me to shift my focus to the “The Impact of COVID-19 on Students” I spent time scheduling interviews with students on my block, as well as interviewing others over a set of internet calls.

Film

Mockumentary Film

Our Mockumentary films were a precursor to the documentary project. In groups of three, we were tasked with creating a mockumentary to help practice the technical aspects of documentary making. All events in the film are 100% fiction.

Documentary Film

As mentioned before, my documentary project was sort of clotheslined by the pandemic, so I was pushed to adapt my documentary to better fit my adaptations.

Reflection

Overall, I believe I can speak for everyone in saying that the Documentary unit didn’t go as planned, but it was a test to how much effort I could put into a project without all of the resources available on campus. I didn’t have the best time producing and filming my documentary, however I feel like it was a quite formative event for me.
