Explorations

Introduction to Explorations Project

We were introduced to the Explorations Project roughly three weeks before the end of the school year. After a large documentary project, I set out to explore something that I wanted to learn for a while – how to film a moving vehicle. To do this, I would go to a local school parking lot and film my father driving into a parking spot. Making this project would improve my ability to demonstrate visual literacy and other important skills.

The first thing that I had to do with this project was research the topic. I used resources like Google, Gale, and other internet sources to fuel my research. I found several helpful websites that were useful to me, and helped me create a short film. While researching, I created some visuals on a Google Document to gather all of my knowledge in one place. The document looks like this.

Moving Vehicles Research

In order to produce this final explorations product, I had to film a moving car (duh). To do this, I went to Springer Elementary School, where there was a parking lot. I had my father drive the same route many times in order to get the perfect shots to use in my explorations film. In total, I had four different shots over the span of 15 seconds. After filming all of the required shots, I then imported all of those shots into Adobe Premiere Pro. Editing and color grading followed, making the film look as best as possible.

Making this project was valuable to me because I got to learn about something that I have always had interest in. I appreciated being able to have the freedom to create what I wanted, in such a short time period. In the future, if I ever need to produce a film with a moving vehicle or a moving car.

Experimental Music

In addition to the film explorations project, we were also tasked to make an experimental music piece in Digital Media. Using Reason, I made a short song demonstrating the different instruments that I learned how to use. Below is what the interface looked like while I was making the song.

After learning all of these skills, it was my turn to present my Explorations Project to the rest of Freestyle. Below is the video of my presentation.

Completing this small project was valuable to me because I learned how rewarding it is to find something that you’re passionate about, and pursue it. I can now build off of these skills in the future, maybe incorporating them into Senior Narrative.

Lastly, here are the slides that I used while presenting.
