This is the short story I wrote for English this unit. It tells the story of a young girl in a new school where she feels she doesn't belong. Hope you like it!

The Test

Elizabeth sat in the car as her dad drove her to school. Instead of thinking about daily gossip and silly things Elizabeth sat in the car thinking about math class. Elizabeth at her new school had gotten in to the advanced math class. When she transfered she was shocked that she was in the highest math class. Apparently there were no other girls that classroom. Elizabeth felt that she needed to prove herself to everyone in the class. If she was going to be accepted then she needed to prove herself in the class by doing well. Elizabeth's thoughts were interrupted when her dad stopped the car at school. She reluctantly stepped out of the car and made her way to math class.
Elizabeth knew from t he moment that she walked in the classroom that everybody would be staring at her or that's what it seemed like. It was her first Friday at the new school. She had been transferred to Oakwood Academy because of her dad's job. She had managed to survive the entire week without any problems. But she still had no idea if she was going to survive the rest of the year. Everyday in the math class was pure torture for her. She was always paranoid and worrying about what everybody was thinking about her. She just wanted to be accepted by the boys in the class. She wanted to prove that she belonged.
She walked through door and the teacher met her with a piece of paper. She nervously looked at the paper. It was her first test. She started to panic and shake as she realized how important the test was. It was a way for her to prove herself to the boys in the class. In order to be accepted she needed to do well on the test. As she walked past the teacher, she thought she saw a look of anger and annoyance. Or that's what it seemed like to her. She wasn't sure if it was meant for her or just that he was tired of teaching. Elizabeth took it personally. It made her feel horrible. She tried to smile, but she couldn't look at the teacher. She felt that if she ever did anything wrong in the class she would ruin her chances of belongi ng. As she started to walk by the teacher she saw a glimpse of confusion on his face. Just for a moment she thought she doubted the teacher had given her a look. But she quickly became paranoid again. She moved to her seat which was the corner seat in the back row of the classroom. She looked around the room again and sighed. Right at that moment the entire room went quiet and everyone turned to look at her. Her hands trembled with fear as everyone slowly turned to stare at her. She slowly slid down into her seat to try and hide her face fuming with embarrassment. She could still hear all of the boys whispering comments about her. Or at least she thought she heard the boys making comments about her. Because they didn't talk to her in the class than they must not like her. So they must be talking behind her back. They wouldn't like her until she proved herself. She wanted to prove herself to the boys and she knew that if she did well on the test it would change everything. Or that's what Elizabeth hoped.
Elizabeth looked at the front of the room as the teacher started to talk. The teacher told them they could start their test and when they were done to bring it up to his desk. Elizabeth took out a pencil and started on the test right away. Of course she made=2 0sure to not look around the classroom to create suspicion. It took her all of fifteen minutes to complete the test. As soon as she finished she felt relieved. She thought she had done well but she wouldn't know for sure until the test was graded. Elizabeth couldn't wait until tomorrow. The torture of waiting a day was eating her up inside. After waiting ten minutes, she stood up from her chair and went to turn in her test. She looked up at the front of the classroom and as she walked by the desks she felt that everybody was staring at her. Yet when she turned around all of the boys were still doing there tests. She sighed once again and glanced down at her paper. Then she started to walk forward. She was quiet and careful to make sure she didn't touch or bother anybody else. As she finally made it to the teacher's desk she let out a huge sigh of relief. She quickly handed her teacher the paper and sulked back to her desk. The relief lasted only a few moments before she started to worry about her answers. Had she put the right number for three? Had she accidentally skipped number eight? These doubts filled Elizabeth's mind until the bell rang for the class to end.
The next day school was even more stressful. It was a day of reckoning because she would get back her test today. The test would decide everything. Or thats what20Elizabeth thought. Either she would be accepted in the class of she would be an outcast for the rest of the year. Elizabeth walked the crowded halls alone as she walked to her math class. Her hands started to tremble as she got closer to the classroom. The only thing that she could think about was what she got on the test. For her the test was everything. When she opened the door all of the boys looked in her direction. Elizabeth moved to her desk and waited. The teacher handed back tests. Each test seemed like a bomb dropping on a desk. It seemed like the shelling landed all around her and the teacher would never give her test back. She wasn't sure if she could survive.
Finally everyone else had gotten their test back. The teacher started walking to Elizabeth's desk. He reached her desk and stopped directly in front of her. He lingered for a moment and finally dropped the test face down on her desk. He turned around abruptly and walked back to his desk. Elizabeth looked at the back of her test and started to lift up the paper. Her hands were trembling. She looked at the test and saw the letter at the top, B+. She was so close yet she didn't get an A on the test. She had failed. She wanted the A. She felt that no matter what the boys wouldn't ever like her. The sound of the boys around her intruded back on her thinking. Everyone around20her was talking about her grades. She realized that none of the boys had gotten better than a B. The boy sitting behind her started talking to her about the television last night and she realized that the boys were just like her friends from the old school. Everyone was normal and no one cared that she was the only girl. Elizabeth felt a huge weight taken off of her shoulders. She realized that she was being paranoid for a stupid reason. It wasn't that the boys didn't like her it was just that they were afraid to get to know her. What she got on the test didn't matter to anyone. She didn't have to prove herself to anyone. She finally felt she belonged.
