Welcome to my documentary website! The documentary project at Freestyle was a massive research project that we worked on during early 2017, and our objective was to portray an influential person, place, or idea in the Los Altos-Mountain View area through various mediums, most importantly a magazine article. I chose to focus on Scott Cutler, the CEO of Stubhub, which is a international online ticket marketplace. He uses a collaborative style of leadership to lead in both his company and his other obligations.
The most challenging part of the project was balancing time. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we had much less time this year than we expected to finish the project. I was forced to cut out details and steps that were not essential to final project in order to save time, but overall I am very proud of the end result. It was perhaps the most challenging project I have ever completed, but at the same time it was extremely rewarding. I felt like the product looked professional and reflected just how much work I put into it.
One of our productions this unit was a commercial made in Adobe After Effects. We learned the basics of how to use the program and put our skills to use showing what we had created this unit. I found After Effects to be a very useful program, so it was rewarding to be able to learn it. I hope to use the program for future productions later.
By far the largest part of the documentary project was our magazine. We first chose a topic, collected both primary and secondary research, and wrote a magazine-style paper about our subject. Then, in Design class, we created a magazine layout and filled it with the photos we had taken and the paper we had written. The overall process took months, and we worked constantly both inside and outside of class. We had to schedule our own interviews of our subjects and come up with our own angles that made the topic interesting.
After my first interview with Scott Cutler, I knew I wanted to focus on his style of leadership, one that was different from the common perception of a big business leader. He was a very interesting subject with many different experiences to talk about, and both he and his wife were a joy to work with. For my magazine design, I focused on the concept of unity and collaboration, using the same colors for different assets and displaying graphics across multiple pages. The image of the many different-sized circles connecting became a common theme across all my productions.
As part of our project, we conducted several interview with people related to our subject. These interviews eventually formed the basis of our research. I interviewed both Scott Cutler and his wife, Melissa Cutler. I was quite nervous to have to prepare and conduct interviews in a more professional setting, but in the end, I got all of the information I needed and more.
Scott Cutler, the star of my documentary project, is the CEO of StubHub, one of the chairpersons of 2017 Los Altos Stake Handcart Trek for the LDS (Mormon) Church, and a father of four. He moved to California after working for the New York Stock Exchange for nine years. Now, he has experience working as a leader in many different areas of life, from business to religion to family life. His more collaborative and open form of leadership stands in contrast to the stereotypical business leader image.
Melissa Cutler is Scott Cutler's wife and the other chairperson of Handcart Trek. In addition, she is the president of the Young Women's program in the LDS Church's Los Altos Ward. As Scott Cutler's wife, she knows more about her husband and what kind of person he is than almost anyone else, making her a good choice to learn more about him.
