Introduction

For our narrative 1 unit, we were taught the art of storytelling, Storytelling at Freestyle took place within many different mediums of art, from auditory mediums to written mediums all the way to visual mediums. Throughout my brief time as a storyteller, I was taught that despite all of these mediums one thing in storytelling remains consistent, one’s unique voice. It is this unique voice that makes storytellers distinguishable and it was during this unit in which I attempted to create and find my own unique voice as a storyteller.

Story

For the first part of the narrative unit, I used the written medium of storytelling to express myself. Initially, when coming up with ideas for a story I went with the “go big or go home” mantra where I wanted to create a groundbreaking story that changed the way one sees the world. When attempting to make this goal formidable I struggled to find my voice which could change the world. However, this struggle soon ended when I realized that this is just my first story and that I don’t need to change the world with my words. I decided to reflect on myself to come up with my story that truly showcases my voice to the fullest. As an avid academic, I chose to write my story on a night of studying that gets unexpectedly disrupted by nature. I decided to use anticipation and humor in my writing style to portray a light tone despite disastrous events taking place. Here is my story The Wrath Of The Tiny Legs.

The Wrath Of The Tiny Legs

“Bzzzp, bzzzzzzzp.”
“Crash”
I swing towards my lamp with a newspaper finally it seems like I have silence I can finally get back to work.
“Click” “Click” “Click”
Aha there it is finally got the answer, Lights flash bright red numbers 11:59 as my eyes rise from the quadratic formula.
“Bzzzzzp” “Bzzzzzzzp”
“Crash”
Silence strikes once again, graphite starts to scar the paper by a number two already etched deep into the lines of the paper inflicting the DNA of the paper
“Bzzzzzzzp”
The number two has been infected. Tiny legs crawl on the number two, not etching into the paper. As if the legs had the weight of a feather, yet the impact of a thousand wild diseased animals infecting the number two. How do I prevent this disease from spreading? Sweaty palms grip the graphite similar to the mount on a rocket.
3, no movement from the tiny legs.
2, still dead still.
1, the infection appears to be ready for death.
Liftoff.
“Bzzzzzzp”
The rocket soars towards the paper.
“Ripp”
The number two has been terminated and it appears as if the infection has left the premise as well. My hand lets go of the graphite and moves towards the warm coffee cup as the magnets on each of my eyelids appear to be getting stronger. The cup touches my lips as the scalding hot liquid burns and scars itself into my tastebuds. The magnets on each of my eyelids feel like they have been lifted off. Bright red lights flash 12:02. My right-hand reaches for the adhesive paper in order to heal the wound that the number two has faced.
“Bzzzzzp”
Just as I was about the heal the number two I feel a tingly feeling on my left hand. May be the scolding hot liquid is working. My lenses refocus and see the tiny legs on my left hand.
“Bzz” “Bzz”
My right-hand rises with the white adhesive paper on it and soars towards my left hand.
“Bzzzzzp”
“Chkk”
The adhesive paper attaches to hairs on my left hand, my right-hand reaches for the adhesive paper and rises straight up as the hairs on my left hand get yanked from its mount.
“Chkk”
A shot of internal pain gets shocked on my left hand all the way up my arm and down my spine back up my spine and into my eyes. A tear falls from my eye and down my cheek in order to make the pain leave the system.
“AAHHH”
A wail leaves my mouth just loud enough to release the pain yet quiet enough to keep the harmony of snores continuous throughout the house. My hand reaches for the adhesive paper once again and heals number twos wound. Graphite continues to etch in the paper by number 2.
“Bzzzzzz”
My face starts to boil as a red color appears on my cheeks, I reach for a ruler and notice the tiny legs on the scalding hot coffee cup the ruler rises and
“Crash”
The scolding hot liquid drips onto my pants as my skin cells on my leg start to loose feeling
“Bzzzzzzzzp”
The tiny legs are in the air and rotating around my head as the ruler attempts to keep up with the speed of the tiny legs. My legs don’t coordinate with my hand and wrap around each other as if they were like the roots of a weeping willow. My force vectors then go out of balance and my face starts speed towards the hardwood floor.
“Crrrunch”
My nose gets scrunched together as I turn on my back.
“Bzzzzzzzzppppp”
The tiny legs soar throughout the room as the ruler attempts to follow the tiny legs eventually land on my family portrait. The ruler soars towards the tiny legs.
“Bzzzzzzzzp”
“Splat”
Silence finally. I let out a sigh. The tiny legs lie on the ruler as I use a tissue to wipe away the tiny legs into the trashcan. I set myself down back on my seat as red lights flash 12:15.
“Bzzzzzp”
My left-hand reaches for my case as I stare at the I tiny legs with fury my airpods leave its resting place. I place them in my ears and let the sounds of Mozart block out the horrors of buzzing. Graphite etches by the number two.

Film Narrative

When going through the narrative unit in my major(film) I was taught how to tell a story without words and simply through visuals. However similar to English my voice as a filmmaker still shined through except this time it was through a screen rather than through a piece of paper. To develop my visual storytelling style I completed practice scenes where I experimented with different styles of visual storytelling so that I would feel comfortable with the storytelling process within film. The first experiment practice scene I did was the chase scene.

Chase Scene

The Chase Scene

This scene was extremely valuable when learning various film making rules the most important of which was the 180-degree rule. The rule explains how when filming a scene there is an invisible line that one must not cross in order to keep continuity in the scene.

Griffith Scene

Griffith

The Griffith pattern is a pattern in film where one introduces the location and characters of a scene in a specified order. Our challenge was to create a Griffith pattern scene while also having some sort of a story in the background.

Suspense Scene

Suspense Scene

This scene attempted to create tensions within the characters of the scene and make the audience feel suspense for what is to happen next. Our group achieved this through a homecoming proposal.

The Final Narrative

Synopsis

Act 1: Mother drops bullied kid to school and hugs bullied kid. Middle schoolers/younger group of bullies hanging around a bench (potentially filmed at Loyola). It is the first day of school, and a younger kid in a walker is seen walking down a hallway. The bullies start smirking and strut up to him because they think they are superior to him. They start making fun of him because he uses a walker. Iffy kid is the main character. There is a follow shot when iffy kid walks into his first class, and there is the kid with the walker sitting down. However, we have a privileged position and we see the kid before the iffy kid. Iffy kid sits down and looks around the classroom. They all have name tags. The kid with the walker is seen drawing on a piece of scratch paper while the teacher is “talking”. The teacher introduces an introductory project about a cause that you deeply care about. Everybody stands up and starts pairing up except for iffy kid and the bullied kid because they can’t find their partners. After everybody is paired up, they sit down. The only people standing up without partners are iffy kid and the bullied kid. Their partner names match (they are partners). Iffy kid seems anxious and irritated.

Act 2: Iffy kid is brainstorming ideas on a sheet of paper while the bullied kid is doodling on his paper (his doodles are fantastic). At the end of class, a bell is heard. Bullied kid nervously slips a piece of paper to iffy kid with his address and some sort of sentence saying “Let’s work later at my house”. The next scene shows iffy kid right in front of bullied kid’s door and he walks inside after bullied kid answers the door. He sees drawings and paintings all over the house. The mom introduces herself and she is super nice and sweet she offers something to eat and shows iffy kid around the house as well as some of the drawings. Iffy kid is taken into bullied kid’s room and there is a closeup of iffy kid’s face he is in awe of bullied kids talent. Iffy kid then starts to engage with bullied kid and there is a long sequence of bullied kid and iffy kid bonding and having fun together. During the montage we can see bullied kid teaching iffy kid how to draw and he gets pretty good at it. We also see a shot of the mother smiling as this is the first time she has seen her son interact with someone from his age group, a tear flows down her cheek. The day ends.

Abyss Moment: The next day is the day of the presentation iffy kid is extremely happy when going to school but doesn’t see bullied kid in class, he gets worried. Where is bullied kid, he is sick, we don’t know how we are going to show this yet but we don’t want it too seem like bullied kid bailed

Act 3: Iffy kid is seen walking in the class. He seems super excited (bullied kid is supposed to have the project with him but he fell sick). After he realizes bullied kid is sick, he gets sad. While other people are presenting, he is sitting in his seat looking around for bullied kid. His hands start shaking and sweating and eventually, it is his turn to present. Since he has nothing to present, iffy kid has to make up something on the spot. Using the skills he learned from bullied kid, he quickly draws something really good with a really good message on it (the drawing is incredible and blows everyone away). All of the bullies faces look devastated and as an audience, we can tell that they feel bad about what they did. After this, he goes to the bullied kid’s house and enters after the mom answers the door. He goes into bullied kid’s room and gives him a hug.
