The Shin Shin Educational Foundation is an organization that devotes itself to the betterment and improvement of students in rural China who do not have access to the same learning materials or learning environments as we do in more industrialized settings. By providing funds, materials, building constructions, training of faculty, and volunteer, the foundation improves schools in rural China, improves the education of the future generation there, and improves the community within the rural settings. In addition to the work Shin Shin accomplishes in China, it has also recently created a Youth Group to carry on the organization's legacy. The Youth Group holds several volunteers between the ages of 12-18 who aid the comunity both in the US and in rural China. In the US, the Youth Group does community service while in China, volunteers teach and decorate at the schools there, not only helping others but also learning about the difficult conditions several people are immersed within.

In the documentary project, we were tasked with documenting an organization or unique person. We did this by attaining confirmation and then initiating several interviews of at least three different individuals related to our subject. We had to record each interview and also take pictures which were each used differently in the different Freestyle classes. In design, we designed a book or magazine, in my case a book, that would be used to document our subject, using design elements and photos. In English, we wrote the text for our book or magazine. Finally, in Digital Media, we made an introduction video, similar to a commercial, for our documentary subject. Overall, I'm relatively satisfied with how the video turned out, though I would have liked to touch up on a few small details. The book I am a bit less satisfied with because I feel like I was extremely rushed and that my writing and quality of photos was lacking.

In Digital Media, we created an introduction video for our documentary subject using Adobe After Effects. During this production, I learned a lot about how to use After Effects such as precompositions, null objects, how to edit a video to match music, how to match an audio recording to a video, and how to create complex animations.

BOOK

In Design class, we designed a book using Adobe InDesign and we also wrote text for the book in English. In this book, I tried to express the achievements and efforts taken by the Shin Shin Educational Foundation. Shin Shin Educational Foundation Logo

While creating this piece, I obtained several new skills such as page laying out, paying attention to photo quality, keeping graphic interest, and how to use Adobe InDesign. In English, I learned how to write a documentary piece while incorporating interviews to continue reader interest. Also, I learned several new writing techniques that documentary and article writers utilize such as anecdotal leads and nut grafs.

BIOS

During the documentary project, I had to interview three people: YanHo Tan, May Lee, and Justin Cai. May and Justin hold leadership roles in Shin Shin's Youth Group while YanHo is the Regional Manager of SiChuan for the Shin Shin Educational Foundation.

YanHo Tan

YanHo is a kind and loving mother who devotes herself to the improvement of the Shin Shin Educational Foundation as their Senior Regional Manager, an occupation where she manages multiple schools in SiChuan, China. Between her duties as a mother and a volunteer, she also enjoys photography, touring, singing, and exercising.

YanHo Tan
May Lee

May is the daughter to YanHe and holds the position of head of public relations within Shin Shin’s Youth Group. Every summer, she travels to rural China to volunteer and teach students at schools there. While she is a leader within the Shin Shin Youth Group, she is also a high school student who participates in color guard and who loves to dance.

May Lee
Justin Cai

Justin is the head of program planning and execution for the Youth Group of Shin Shin where he finds and organizes community service events for volunteers. Outside of Shin Shin, he participates in Boy Scouts and Speech and Debate.
