Zenith

So, Zenith. It’s somewhat exhilarating to get a project like this, a project where you can actually work on whatever you want. Zenith is an opportunity for Freestyle students to be able to hone the best of our abilities using the materials we’ve learned and are able to work with at Freestyle.

So my project in particular is going to be a mix of 2D animation and 3D animation. Because I learned so much about 3D animation this year, I thought it would be appropriate to find a way to implement it into this project. So all of my character models will be entirely 2D as well as the special effects, but the background will be entirely 3D. The difficult task of combining two mediums will test my time management skills and hopefully improve them. Because my video will have supernatural elements, the combination of 2D and 3D animation should hopefully result in an otherworldly feeling, as the characters will look purposefully out of place.

The project will be a music video, so I will be composing the song to use. Though the instrumentals will be mostly made by me, I will use a second vocalist for the song, which will be provided by my friend Miriam, a classmate from outside of Freestyle. The song will first be composed on Noteflight, then the final instrumentals will be composed on FL Studio and Reason. The 2D animation will be done on Photoshop CS6, while the 3D animation will be done on Autodesk Maya. Final editing will be done on Premiere Pro.

Week 2

A page of the sheet music made on Noteflight being put together for composition.

Week 4

Some pages from the storyboard, at this point most of the storyboard pages have been finished.

Week 6

The audio as seen on Pro Tools. The instrumentals were put together on FL Studio and the vocals were edited in with the instrumentals on Audacity, but some of the speaking lines were recorded using Pro Tools.

Week 8

A few of the frames cleaned up using Photoshop CS6. At this point, it’s clear that there’s not enough time to make the project fully animated, so I switched gears and focused on finishing an animatic instead. I tried to make sure the keyframes captured particularly enunciated or important lines in the song.
