In this project I experimented with different forms of art in all of my Freestyle classes, Film, English and Digital Media. I learned how to use many different professional softwares in Digital Media such as Photoshop, Audition, Pro Tools, Avid Pro. In film I learned how to set up a camera and use experimental concepts in my Films. In English we explored the book The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, which further strengthened my experimental mind.

Art Reflection

In the beginning of the year at Freestyle we go on a field to trip to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SF MoMa). We go on this trip to gain inspiration for the art we’re going to make the following year. After the field trip we are given a chance to reflect on our experiences causing me to make my Art Reflection video. In the making of this video I had to understand and debrief the concepts of the art pieces I connected with most at the museum.

I value this project for getting me warmed up to how Freestyle is and the community aspect. I love how we were given the opportunity to find a work of art that we resonate with and make a video reflecting on it.

I chose Straight Outta Compton to parody because I thought it would be ironic that I was rapping about Atherton in a “gangster” song. I wrote all of the lyrics on a google doc and made sure they lined up on each bar. Some lyrics I intentionally made incredibly off beat to make it sound less serious. Then I recorded the vocals and used the best take of each bar. I found recording the vocals very fun because it made me feel like a real musician. I based all of the lyrics on, Paul Allen, one of the cofounders of Microsoft. All of the lyrics are actual facts about him such as his conflict with Bill Gates and his 88′ Mazda B-Series. I’m most proud of making this song light hearted and with a little bit of actual substance with regards to the life of one of Microsofts founders.

Behind the Scenes

Photoshop Blend Modes

This assignment was for the purpose of learning how to blend multiple photos together in photoshop to change the image. We used different types of blends to brighten and darken an image or combine two images into one overlayed image.

I value learning blend modes to add more complexity to simple photos by overlaying other photos. It also gives me a whole different perspective to photography because I can think of how certain framing could be overlayed better.

I see myself using the two photo blend to make double-exposure like photos.

DSLR Practice Photos

This assignment was for us to learn how to use our cameras. We learned long exposure photography, flash photography and many other styles of photography.

Using the camera for film I learned how to use manual mode very quickly so I never really tried any other modes. However in Digital media we learned about altering photos white balance’s to give them different looks. We also learned how to use speedlights on backdrops to light the intended subject well.

Film

The Conceptual unit in film has been a fun one. We have learned many basics of filmmaking, such as special fx, composition, and how to use a camera. Mr. Taylor also taught us experimental ways of film production. All of this leading to our core project of the unit, our experimental film. In this film we were given a randomly selected prompt and do literally anything with it. We learned how to think outside of the box and let go of creative restrictions.

A Blink of an Eye (Experimental)

This film is about how you can feel alone even in a room of people and then feel surrounded when nobody is around. It shows how nature engulfs you in it, making you feel whole.
