This was the experimental unit at Freestyle. It gave us a chance to open doors that had been restricted to us before, and it gave me a chance to dig inside of me and pick what I wanted to do, instead of what was exactly assigned. Though that sounds very open ended, the chance to make what you want and explain how you think with no limits and restrictions was wonderful, and I feel like this unit gave me a chance to embrace my creativity more so than any of the other Units.

For this unit, we used many different programs (starting from left to right on the different spry tabs). Starting with the Animation, we used Flash to animate our poems, which we had written in class, and then used Protools to record and edit the audio. Then, looking at the music, I wrote it and played it in Reason. I edited it to make sure it sounded just as I wanted it, then exported it as a .wav file, soon to be transferred over to a .ogg file and a .mp3 file so that it could be played on all browsers, then fitted it into the code so it could be played over my website. The poems were all written by my, all focusing on a different idea of perspective. There are many different kinds of perspective, such as visual perspective, social perspective, and age perspective, and I tried to I outline each different type in a creative and different format through each poem I wrote. Finally, the design project Experimental art piece. It started out as a simple drawing, scanned and then opened into Adobe Illustrator. Then were drawn out there, then printed and I painted over the splotches to give them a more 3D effect.

This first year at freestyle has been a learning experience like no other. The teachers were not only wonderful mentors with plenty to teach and the enthusiasm and passion to make it interesting, but also friends I could go to if I had a problem or needed help. The classes were taught to my understanding and it gave me a chance not only to bloom as a student, but to become a stronger and more confident person. This has been the most amazing experience and I am honored to have been able to be a part of Freestyle. I await for next year with the excitement to learn more and grow more here at Freestyle Academy.

Animated Poem

When I was little,
I could see a table
sitting on the kitchen floor.
I saw the legs, the bottom, the corner,
always wondering if there was more.

Then I grew older,
standing much taller,
watching just like before.
And I realized something seemed different to me,
and something inside me tore.

Was it always this short?

This poem is telling a story about a girl growing up and how she sees the kitchen table changing instead of her. The girl is growing up, but she chooses to acknowledge the changing of the table instead of her, seeing as in her perspective, she hasn't changed, but the table has. I wrote the poem keeping a very basic rhyme scheme and a little bit of a rhythm when speaking it verbally, but breaking it at the end to show the sudden realization that the character is having.
The girl in the animation is very basic and very bare to keep an open interpretation of who she is, and to let the viewer use their imagination to see the girl more like who they want to. It stays very basic throughout the entire animation, the little pauses and tilting of heads, or blinking is the only noticeable movement in the poem because any other huge movements would take away the necessary basics that the poem is trying to show.

Music

The music I choose to use here is called "Sparkle." It's a very light piece with cute and calm instruments such as the Glockenspiel and a light high hat. The inspiration came to me when I was showing my older sister my older websites and I stumbled upon my Self-Portrait one with teddybears and childish toys. It made me think about how other people would choose very different types of music, and how I would like to portray a little more of myself in it. My older sister laughed when she saw it and I realized that was what I wanted my music to portray; a relaxed giggle that makes people smile.

The message of the music is Sparkle, with all of the meaning of that word. Each person is different and each person is special, so why not relax and smile. Some wise person once said "Your smile is a ray of sunshine," so why not let it sparkle?

This song was written by me and played in Reason. It uses only four instruments, three of which have a very light and repetitive beat to them to keep a feeling of consistency. The melody, however, is kept random throughout the 50 second song and gives it the upbeat and innocent feeling.

Poetry

My central word was Prespective, so I chose to focus on different types of perspectives and how they differ between circumstances. "The Table" was one that focused on a very visual perspective, showing the difference in height as a child grew up, but also showed how the character viewed the table.

My art explores this idea of a changing perspective from an adult to a child. It shows what the adult thinks and wants and what he perceives as important, along with what the child wants and what the child perceives as important. They differ greatly, for the adult is more focused on money and power, while the child is focused on initial happiness and childish delight. The images that each side use differ greatly.

The two silhouettes of the adult and of the child stand in front of a large circle that represents the change over time and the innocence protecting the child's perspective and ideas. The adult's perspective is on top, dripping down onto the circle below. The items look spray-painted and fake, the items dripping and gathering onto the edge of the circle. It appears to be dripping to show an attempt to infringe on the child's perspective, but it is unable to pass through the time circle. The child's perspective is on the inside of the circle, it's innocence protected from the adults reality by the perspective circle.
