Explorations

For our final, we were assigned a Explorations project. We were able to pick any skill set or job in the design film, and create a final product that addresses one of the 21st Century Skills.

For my project, I decided to focus on a field that i’ve been interested in for as long as I can remember: fashion design. When I was eight I was obsessed with Project Runway, a popular TV show in 2012. It was because of the hold that show had on me, I decided to create my own dress. If they could do it, why couldn’t I? I was eight, thats why. I really wanted a ball gown, made of organza and tulle so I could feel like a princess. I drew it up, and asked my mom for help. The outcome couldn’t have been more different than my vision. It was made of an olive green table cloth with maroon stripes, held up by a maroon ribbon. Although it wasn’t at all what I wanted, I loved it.

Because of this experience, I wanted to explore fashion design and creating my own pieces. I originally wanted to make an entire dress from scratch, but I realized the unrealisticness of that goal. I settled on the next best thing, altering clothing. I love thrifting so I decided to learn to repurpose clothing I find in second hand stores, so that I can turn the pieces into something new.

We were able to pick any skill set or job in the design film, and create a final product that addresses one of the 21st Century Skills. The skills I chose to demonstrate throughout this process were Create Media Products (Understand and effectively utilize the most appropriate expressions and interpretations in diverse, multi-cultural environments) and numerical literacy (Demonstrate ability to reason with numbers and other mathematical concepts).
