Documentary

INTRODUCTION/REFLECTION

For our junior documentary project, we were to research a topic of our choice, focusing on a person, group, place, idea, or issue. We wrote a five page paper, and for my elective, produced a 90 animation using the interviews we compiled. For my documentary I focused on the topic of Asian parents and expectations. Overall, I feel I paced myself much better compared to the narrative project, I set a realistic goal for my animated film and completed it in the required timeframe. It allowed me to delve into a topic that I have a great amount of interest in.

STORYBOARDS

We were given a month to produce our films, for my film, I interviewed my aunt who was born and raised in China. She provided the audio I needed to structure my film around, and I selectively pieced together segments to create a cohesive message. The overall aesthetic was made to resemble paper and pencil, as my aunt expressed her love for drawing. The initial storyboards were heavily edited from the final product.

During the finalization of audio and storyboard, I decided to incorporate the theme of the origami crane. An object that has signifigance to the myth that folding a thousand cranes would bring someone back. When my grandmother, my aunt’s mother, passed away, one of my earliest childhood memories was folding cranes for her. I hoped this would represent my Aunt striving to make her satisfied, but never being able to. I animated the film in Photoshop using video layers. Most of the film is done in straight-forward animation, while one segment is rhotoscoped. I put the film together in After Effects.

RESEARCH PAPER

To accompany our films, we wrote a 5 page research paper. It was helpful for providing multiple points of view, and enriched my knowledge on the subject.
