Limerence
  • an involuntary state of mind which results from a romantic attraction to another person combined with an overwhelming, obsessive need to have one's feelings reciprocated

For the first time during my time here at Freestyle, I was able to collaborate with other Freestyle students. During this unit, I worked in a group with Andie, also a web student (you can visit her website here: http://freestyleacademy.rocks/~andieb/Music_Video.html), and Binh, who is film student, to produce a song and a music video to go with it.

Our song, Shivers, was written by Andie during our junior year for the Experimental Unit. It was originally based off the phrase, “suspicion while listening to music.” Andie was inspired to write a song about a siren who lures a sailor to his death. Even though he is suspicious, he cannot resist the hypnotic allure of her voice.

After some tweaks to the original lyrics, we went on to record Andie singing and playing the song on her ukulele in the studio. Later in Protools, we realized that mixing music is a lot more difficult and complicated than we had expected it to be. We needed to incorporate both live and electronic instruments and deciding on which instruments to put where was not an easy task. Filming our music video was a lot more fun. Andie, Binh, and I had a great time admiring the view from the top of a hill at Rancho San Antonio, where the fog sat on the city and created a gorgeous landscape, and also smashing glass in Binh’s driveway.

Artwork

In Design, I created a poster for our band and a design for a t-shirt. I used Illustrator and Photoshop to create my artwork. Below, you can read my artist statement and view my group members’ artwork as well.

Our song, Shivers, is somewhere in between indie and pop. It’s dark, moody vibe and acoustic sound was influenced by various bands, including Arctic Monkeys and Jack’s Mannequin.

Limerence is defined as “an involuntary state of mind which results from a romantic attraction to another person combined with an overwhelming, obsessive need to have one's feelings reciprocated” We felt that this band name was fitting as Shivers was inspired by the idea of a siren luring a sailor to his doom.

Our music gives off a dark and eerie feeling so I wanted to echo dark tones throughout my artwork, composing my color scheme out of cool, dark colors; blue, purple, gray, and black. One of the lines in our song is, “what you see is always different from what you hear.” Vision is a sense that cannot be trusted; it is not completely there; it is unreliable and inconsistent. In my poster, I used many converging lines to emulate the shape of an eye to reflect the theme of deceptive vision in the song. The hands reaching towards each other represent obsession, a theme present in both our song concept and our band name. The font I used was chosen to complement the design of my poster. Constructed from a series of lines, it is similar to the lines I created for my poster.

I used the same fonts, color scheme, and maintained the same atmosphere in my shirt design. I also included the theme of flawed vision in my shirt design. However, instead of using lines to simulate an eye shape, I designed it to resemble the iris of an eye. I used a photo of Binh facing away from the camera in place of the pupil of the eye and edited the photo so that it would look distorted and unrealistic. Even though the focal point of my shirt is circular, I placed my text in straight, intersecting lines so that it would match both the lines in the font and the linear design of my poster.
