introduction

This, being our last unit at Freestyle, was an opportunity to explore new ideas and generally have fun for the last few weeks while still sort of being productive. The "Experimental Unit" encouraged us to branch out, try new things, and generally embarrass ourselves in front of our classmates.

In this unit, we were kind of split between a few projects. This includes the blink book, the satire unit, and a free-reign project that allowed us to explore a subject by ourselves, and to create something from that.

We also learned about website design that can change with different viewing devices. If you view this website on a phone, a tablet, or a computer, it will look different each time. This way, no matter how you choose to view it, it is always at its most optimal!

blink book

The Blink Book is a compilation of some art we created using a variety of media, inspired by a written prompt session. This is an interesting project because it encompasses traditional art, writing, and graphic design.

We made these books using Adobe inDesign after editing our artwork in Photoshop. Some pieces stayed relatively the same, but others were changed completely. After we finished all the editing and designing, we ordered the books on Blurb and received a finished, hard-cover copy.

satire unit

The satire project had us viewing and analyzing works of humor and satire, eventually culminating in us giving our own perfomance in either stand-up, satire, or speech. We also created a piece of satirical art to go along with it.

Here is the transcribed stand-up I wrote and the satire, which has little to do with my actual stand-up because I changed my topics.

processing

My friend Courtney and I learned a little bit about the program "Processing" after a previous Freestyle student came in and talked about his experiences. He inspired us to try it out after he talked about how it had influenced his professional path.

Processing is a pretty intuitive program in some respects. It is an easy language to start if you don't have any prior experience. In only a few hours and little prior expierence, Courtney and I developed a program that allows you to draw and erase pictures.

Click on the face above to try it out. It may not work on phones and tablets, but I guess it doesn't hurt to try.

If you make anything fun with our program, I would love to see it!
