Introduction

T he documentary project was created as a tool for us to go out into the world and share someone's or something's story with the tools we have learned over our year at Freestyle. We have combined very minute of every lesson into our project to create a website, a magazine, an after effects animation video, and an essay. At the forefront of my project I have Sam and Truly Pompeii, a couple that got married three months ago. Right alongside Sam and Truly I have interviewed three other married couples, all at very different stages of their marriage.

I have learned so much about relationships through this project and it's not very common that a highschool student grows as an individual through a project assigned for school. This was my favorite thing I've ever had the opportunity to do in highschool, so I hope you enjoy what I've learned about marriages and relationships as a whole.

My overall content goal was to create an entertaining and interesting representation of my conducted interviews. When I invisioned this project, I wanted it to be a story that people got excited to learn about when I posed the question: "What keeps marriages together?". The ability to understand the highest level of commitment and relationship is something that is very hard to achieve. I have learned just as much about non intimate relationships as intimate relationships, which I did not expect entering this project. With that being said, welcome to my documentary website!

Magazine

This aspect to the project was crucial for me. I loved being able to create my own magazine because it brings coherence and organization to my project. My favorite thing about this project was getting to know all of my interviewees and the self growth I possesed after the interviews. I was a complete stranger to some of my interviewees, and they completely opened up and talked about their marriage and love stories. Hearing about all of the different values and stories of each couple, I've drawn key parallels to my own life as well

"A marriage allows yourself to face problems, solve problems and develop ways of dealing with the world that you can't get if you're by yourself tyring to resolve your own issues."

as parallels to my project's central question: What Keeps a Marriage Together? I've loved being able to connect with so many great people through this project and my magazine allowed me to organize all of their amazing stories and values into one orderly visual. At first, I didn't know what I was going to be able to derive from this topic since there are so many doors that can be opened with marriage, but in the end, I got more than I ever expected to get. I grew as a person, and I also loved exploring this idea called marriage. Click the image of Sam and Truly above to see my magazine!

About Sam and Truly

Sam and Truly Pompeii have known each other for 19 months, and have been married for 3. One Friday night when Sam was working at a wine bar in Mountain View, Truly and her friends walked in towards the end of the night and Truly ordered a glass of white burgundy wine. Nobody really orders this kind of wine at a wine bar for two reasons: it’s kind of “weird” as Sam puts it and very expensive. So, when Sam noticed that he was immediately intrigued.

About Judith and David

The Hamiltons have been married for 55 years. Meeting in college at a very different time period than the one we live in today, women went to college to get their MRS degree (find ourselves a man). Judith Hamilton while talking about concepts on marriage 50 years ago she says “If you get out of college without a husband your prospects were really bad. It was pretty much the ‘little wifey’ and the man was the dominant one and made the decisions… Creepy now.” Meeting at a college leadership camp, they were both familiar with each other prior to linking up. Judith knew he was the guy for her when she was leaving the cooking lab just after making a chocolate cream pie which she guarded all day long from her roommates to give to David.

About Andrew and Kevin

Andrew and Kevin Decker have been together for 10 years, and married for 3 years. Being very different people, the concept that opposites attract stands tall. Andrew and Kevin met through a facebook group affiliated with their jobs at Apple. Although Kevin was not trying to start anything intimate with Kevin, they immediately clicked over Andrew’s interest in Kevin’s favorite TV shows and movies: Star Trek the next generation, Voyager, and Deep Space 9..

About Juan and Ivania

Having met in middle school and being connected through Juan’s mother, they became great friends. Juan claims that when Ivania saw him playing basketball, she fell in love with him. Ivania claims that she saw him on the basketball court and realized he existed, because previously she only knew his older brother went to their school. Nonetheless, they started to date a year or so after that experience and have been married since they were 18 years old. Middle school sweet hearts!
