Introduce Short Story

Black and Blue

“Bailey, grab your bags! The taxi is here!”

I made my way up the stairs and stood in the middle of my room. I looked up at the clock ticking past one, my dad yelled one more time for me to get downstairs or I would be left behind. I didn’t want to leave all my friends, my team, and my little room in the corner of the house.

Now it is time for me to experience a new life in California. My dad got a job offer at Google, which was the reason why we had to move. We found a nice place on the outskirts of Los Altos. Coming from the middle of winter in Iceland I was aghast at the sight of the sun at 7 in the morning. I walked up the steps of my new high school, Los Altos High, at 8:00 on a warm August morning.

“Hey, you must be the new kid from Iceland!” Said a familiar face, I must have recognized them from around town.

“Yeah I am.” I replied.

“I’m Noah nice to meet you, what class do you have first?”

I promptly replied, “Trigonometry, I’m not sure where the room is, though.” Noah offered to show me where after realizing we had the same class.

Lunchtime rolled around and I had already met a couple of new people through Noah. He introduced me to Will, the football quarterback, Sarah, the school newspaper editor in chief and Henry, the varsity soccer captain. I sat with them at lunch in the quad with the rest of their group who I soon met. First was Harry, a little bit of a wild child, he is known as the kid who threw all the ragers and partied a lot with his college brothers. Then he introduced me to Nick.

“Hey I’m Nick, nice to finally meet you. I heard you have a lethal fadeaway.” I quickly laughed.

“I wouldn’t say lethal but I can definitely drop some dimes,” I said.

“You should come out and tryout for the basketball team, we need a new small forward!” He blurted. I told him I would keep it in mind.

He replied, “Okay, I’ll put in a good word with coach for you.” The clock ticked past 4. I grabbed my bag and keys and headed for school.

“Hey man, glad you could make it,” Said Noah.

“Yeah, haha I’m psyched.”

“You can warm up with the rest of us I already talked to coach.”

“Great, I’ll be right there.” It’s time for homecoming and everyone is frantically looking for a date. I had finally began to settle in but wasn’t talking to anyone I could bring to homecoming. I had a knack for always talking to girls with boyfriends.

“Hey Bailey, why don’t you go with Mel?’ Said Sarah.

“I don’t know, she just isn’t my type, I also accidentally hit her trash cans backing up and never said anything.”

“I’m sure she doesn’t care, you should meet up with her after school and get food or something.”

“Maybe…” What I was really hoping for was to bring Sarah but of course she was going to go with Noah because if anyone valued their head on their shoulders, no one would take Sarah.

“Who are you going with anyways?” I said, redirecting the conversation from me and my lady problems.

“I don’t know, Noah wanted me to go with him but I really don’t want to.”

“Yes, yes, yes,” I thought, “This is my chance to get my dream girl and take her to homecoming,” but all that came out was, “Oh damn I’m sorry, that sucks.”

“Yeah, I think I might just go alone.”

“NOOOOOO, GO WITH ME, I DON’T LIKE MEL! I LIKE YOU!” echoed in my head.

Two days, later and homecoming is only three days away. “

I still haven’t found a date to the dance I said in utter frustration to Nick. We had began to grow closer and we hung out almost everyday after school to shoot hoops.

“Damn bro, why don’t you take Sarah?, She doesn’t want to go with Noah.” Nick Said.

“Yeah I wanna but I don’t think she wants to go with me,” I said.

“Why wouldn’t she? Your tall, exotic and blonde!” I burst out laughing, thinking I might have a chance after all.

“Alright, fuck it, let’s do it.”

“Okay we can shoot later, let’s go get some supplies for a dope poster.” Said Nick as he grabbed his backpack and headed toward the student parking lot. Two hours later and we had the best poster: “Sarah, it would be a SLAM DUNK if you went to Homecoming with me!” Of course accompanied by a basketball, it would be perfect for Sarah. I couldn’t wait until lunch tomorrow.

Nick called out to me, “Bro, hurry up! She is coming!”

“Okay, I’m coming!” I told him.

“Oh shit, Noah is with her, you still wanna do this?”

“Yeah, it should be fine.”

I walk around the corner to see Sarah with her back turned to me, talking to Noah. Noah looks over at me and sees the poster in my hand. Immediately his eyebrows furrowed into a deep V.

“Shit” I thought.

“Hey Bud, Whatcha got there?” Noah said.

I ignored him and proceeded to ask Sarah with my poster. Without a moment of hesitation she said yes.

“W-w-w-hat are you doing?!” Noah stuttered out.

“I’m going to homecoming.” Sarah replied.

“With him?!”

“Yeah, he was the one who just handed me the sign right?” Everyone began to laugh at how Sarah humiliated Noah in front of all his friends. Noah’s face turned bright red as he stormed away with Harry giving him shit all the way.

Mission accomplished! I had achieved my goal of getting the hottest girl in school to go to homecoming with me and in the process showed up the school jock. All within the first 2 months of school. Walking out of the quad I thought to myself, this is going to be one hell of a school year.
