Personal Essay

In English this year, we focused on the major question, “who am I?” This has been a prominent question in my life these past couple of months as I apply to colleges. I have to write letters to schools telling them who I am, when frankly, I am 17 and I don’t really have a clue. I think what I have realized in this process is that I need to focus on who I am so far, and who I would like to be, and with that which path will get me there. When we have focused on our core values as the basis for our personal essays, I focused those values around what I would like to build upon in myself. So in English, when we were asked to make a personal essay answering the dreaded question, I rolled my eyes at the 500 word limit, and got brainstorming. This is my final piece, but I do not believe it answers who I am, because there is no sequence of 500 words that have even the slightest potential to do that.

Honors: Memoir Essay

In honors English, we read a memoir book of our choice. I chose a book on sexism in different institutions. Jessica Valenti’s Sex Object is an amazing book highlighting the everyday injustices against women. I was tasked with writing an essay discussing the purpose of the book and the emotions and values that are projected.
