Poetry Intention Statement

Intention Statement:

In “Consider the ABC’s,” I am exploring the feeling of envy through the experience of learning to love. The narrator of this story is me and other young, high school aged girls. The subject of this poem, who the narrator is referring to, is women such as my grandma, who were both fierce and confined. This poem speaks of the women of a time in which they were seemingly voiceless. This poem claims these women are proud of their womanly descendents, living the lives they do, but they also feel a sort of envy. The speaker seems to feels admiration for the speaker, and perhaps a level of guilt. The subject seems clear of the lack of privilege women have, but they seem to be proving a point to the audience, more than directing the subject, therefore there is not an entirely clear feeling toward the subject. I used an asyndeton to create the appearance of an endless list in the first line, as if I am continuously clarifying my thoughts. This first line also used synecdoche with by referring to the story of many women to simply ink. The next several lines uses alliteration to appeal to the reader’s sense of sound, and to make the words flow together. I continued the the use of alliteration in the next line including a contrast between the adjectives tranquil and fiery. The continuing lines use a sort of parallel structure with a beginning repetition of ABC. The final line comes back to the original synecdoche with ink representing the whole story.
