Photo Haiku

In our poetry unit in English, we started out by creating haikus based on concept statements that we drew from a bag. Mine was I am exploring the feeling of curiosity through preserving memories. We were challenged to use kireji and kigo, which are techniques used in traditional Japanese haikus. Kireji is used as a cutting word, transitioning or connecting two lines that would otherwise be separate clauses. Kigo is a word that is directly or indirectly associated with a specific season.

We were challenged to experiment with photography in order to take a picture to illustrate some of the ideas in our haikus. Later in digital media, we created a video with voice overs, effects, and music as an introduction to editing on Adobe Premiere Pro. All of our videos were posted to Freestyle’s youtube channel after we created the final products.

Poems

In our poetry unit in English, we wrote poems as a way of responding to our concept statements and communicating a message. My first poem was an ekphrastic poem, which was a response to a piece of art I saw on our field trip to the SF MOMA. My second was a free verse poem, where we were given free reign to write about whatever we wanted. We then recorded out poems, created cover art on photoshop, and made a visual with the text of our poem.

Exquisite Corpse Poem

In English we made an exquisite corpse poem in groups, where we each wrote one line and could only see the line right before ours. In digital media, we took photos and created visuals for our line, recorded voice overs, and compiled all of the separate parts in After Effects.

Photoshop Blend Modes

Blend modes are different effects that are applied to layers on photoshop. We used them to add interest and improve photos we took.

blend modes to combine photos   brush tool to add contrast

blend modes to combine photos   multiply to make photo look less washed out

overlay blend modes to make keys stand out more   screen to make photo more visible

screen to make image lighter . multiply to darken and add more interest
