LISTENER LYRIC

You can’t remember what it was. Some offhand joke that stirred a response. It was funny, so you laughed. But after the moment ends, you seem to have been too fast. Why are they still laughing? Was it that funny?

You feel more and more ostracized with each second that passes. With every giggle you are pushed away. You feel sweat on your hands. Do they know you aren’t laughing?

Why are you still thinking?

What does a laugh sound like? To your left, it’s breathy and short, staccato and even. To your right, you hear howling with only a split second to catch air. Everything’s happening too fast in a language you can’t understand. You don’t need to add anything-you wouldn’t want to interrupt the melody.

Sometimes you wish you didn’t think. Why can’t you have just a moment of true human connection, with nothing on your mind? To throw your head back and laugh with no restraint, no preparation or payoff. Not stuck in your own head, chasing yourself in circles until you’ve been sucked into your own whirlwind.

But every action has a thought. Every word is intentional, and every conversation must be analyzed fully. Every text and every call, everything you do has a consequence in the future. Would lack of thought be freeing? To take everything for what it is, surface level, as it came to you. Finally evading the loneliness of individual thought. A joke would just be a joke and a laugh just a laugh.

But it’s inescapable. Following from the moment you wake up to your final thoughts before sleep, through any situation. People tell you to think less. Others say complex thought is a gift. You know that running from your own mind would be fruitless. Everything that goes on in your head is what makes you you. Stripping away your insecurity, worry, and anxiety would only leave a stranger.
