Introduction To Portrait Photography

In this unit I am allowed to produce a piece on anything using 21 century skills to show my passion. I will then present this work as my semester 2 final project to my classmates. In English I will research this topic and create a visual representation.

I have always wondered how to take portrait photography. How the photographer has the ability to capture someone’s soul in just a single photo. I wanted to try this out, this is what I choose for my project. I have always wondered how to take portrait photography. How the photographer has the ability to capture someone’s soul in just a single photo. I wanted to try this out, this is what I choose for my project. I choose this project because I have always been into photography but never thought I would be able to take quality photos. I never thought that I had the magic touch of capturing the moments. So I wanted to see if I could be successful.

Portrait Photography Process

So first I planned out what kind of pictures I wanted to take. Then I shot for 2 days with 3 different models. I used the staff room with the backdrops and the lighting. I was in the room with the model for about 20-30 mins. I took around 100-200 photos per model. I got different angles for most of the shots and I tried new things as well. I had to mess with the lighting a lot.

The video below is showing the process of how I produced my protrait shots.

Final Production

Going into my Explorations porject I had no idea what I wanted to do. But I have always had a passion for photography, especially protraits. So I started out with some research on what it takes to create a portratit that captures who that person is. I then looked at multiple examples of portraits taken by professional photographers. I looked at all the different styles to see what I would gravitate towards. When I finally started to shot I was mostly figuring everything out in the moment.

Below is a picture of my Inforgraphic which I created in Design that shows the steps and tips on how to produce a high quality portrait.

Reflection

Learning from this project I learned that you should never say you can’t do something. You should always try new things and branch out of your comfort zone. I also learned that portrait photography is hard but not impossible. The hardest aspect of this type of photography is lighting. It is such a huge factor in whether your photo will turn out good or not.
