Introduction

Hi, my name is Jiale Wan ( you can call me Jay); Welcome to my website showcase about the work I’ve done during my time in Freestyle Academy! I attended Mountain view High School, and I’m a WebAudio student. Even though I’ve only attended one year of Freestyle, I still learned a lot of skills required for me to create what I had in mind. For my portfolio, I had the hardest time finding my focus throughout my Freestyle endeavor because I’ve worked with so many tools and people for different protects from animation soundtracks to research papers. However one thing I find underlining in all of the projects I’ve worked is the code that I had to create in making the websites. More importantly, the design and development of projects using just lines of code.

Profile

The profile assignment was the first project I’ve ever worked on in Freestyle. Although I was quite overwhelming to learn how to use all the tools like Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Indesign, After Effects, and Photoshop at once. However it was really worth the while to learn these tools as it brought me to one step closer to understanding using code to create designs I wanted. I worked extensively on the animation and design of the website. The user can get a sense of my profile subject just from interactions of the website. Main purpose of the magazine was to create a interactive website that showcases the person I interviewed. My interest in Computer Science and how I want to see how a professional views the advancement in technology. The 21st Century Skills I used were to take risks (interviewing and it's the 1st ever project I worked on). Technological literacy (using various tools to create the website). Social responsibility (document the change in society and how technology and computer science skills is reshaping how we learn.). Creativity (Creating a website that looks different with different interactions). Looking back, I could have worked more on the style and interactions the website. For instance the background the of website.

Innovator

The innovator assignment was the last project I’ve ever worked on in Freestyle. If my Freestyle career is a 3 course meal, this would be the whole meal. The innovator project really captured everything who I’m as a freestyle student and my passion as a creator. Similar to how my first project, I was overwhelmed by the amount of learning needed to understand Unity. I’ve utilized my previous coding skills in Java and further expanded my knowledge in using Unity to code in C#. Main purpose of the Innovator project was to create a full working game using Unity with my classmate Sumukh Vaze. Sumukh and I had always wanted to make a game from personal interest. We are both passionate gamers and coders. I was in charge of UI design, background music, level design, graphic design, and bug fixing. I learned about the importance of communication in a collaborative work. I also created all the soundtracks for the game which was my original project. Some of the 21 century skills I learned was self-direction and risk taking (setting an ambitious project for both of us.) Teaming and Collaboration: We split our work and combine our individual talents to create the game. Creativity - We set out to create a game that has a unique sense of mechanics that makes it stand out from other 2D platformers. Looking back I could have worked better on communication with my partner so the game can be further progressed instead of fixing bugs.

Conclusion

Finally, throughout this whole Freestyle experience I feel the most important aspect of the class is to learn as much as you can and utilize those skills on what you wanted. Creating a game was a very ambitious task and I was able to achieve the goal because of everything I learned from Freestyle. I struggle to find a focus for me because I learned and did so many little things from Freestyle that it’s like choosing your favourite child. In the future I plan to learning more about Unity and other APIs that allows me to create games on many different platforms in different languages. For instance Android Studio. I also want to keep in touch with writing soundtracks for projects because I’m as passionate in music as in coding. In college I plan to major in Computer Science to fully understand coding so I can develop more complex games. After college, I plan to set out to keep on creating ambitious project for myself and maybe further develop on the game I created.
