“How do you creatively and truthfully portray a significant person, group, place, idea, or issue in the community?”

For the Junior Documentary Project, all students were assigned to researching a topic that held interest to them. We then took this interest and expanded upon in the field, interviewing others, and studying up on the topic on the Internet and Books. This was an intensive project, but the lessons we were able to take out of this will prove to be beneficial for all students in the future.

For my project, I looked into Bay Area Housing Prices as for some time I have been tracking the expenses of the Bay Area. Along with this study, I dove into the impacts of Gentrification in the Bay Area in cities such as East Palo, Oakland, and San Francisco.

Through this project, I learned the importance of planning and why the Bay Area is so expensive. An attractive place to come to for many individuals looking to find a job in the Bay Area makes for a great place for many to start their careers. The immense number of people wanting to come to the Bay Area has led to increasing numbers in population and housing prices. For these reasons, the Bay Area has become one of the most expensive places to live in not only the United States but the world.

Design

For this project, we initially were planning on constructing a book related to the topic of our choice, but due to the coronavirus shifted into building a magazine. This magazine required the graphic elements and photographs displayed below.

This is a photograph of 24 Karat Gold I purchased in Sacramento. This represents the San Francisco Gold Rush the capsulated the interests of many in the United States. After taking this photo, I used Adobe Illustrator to edit out the background of the photo.
This is a graphic I created in Adobe Illustrator that was supposed to indicate rising housing prices.
This was a photo I took on my DSLR Camera of the San Francisco Bay Area from the hills of Palo Alto.
This was a picture of the Los Altos sign located at Lincoln and Burke. This was a picture I used to show some of the cities located in the Bay Area.
This was a design I drew in Adobe Illustrator of the San Francisco Skyline. I used only three colors in the creation of this artwork.
This was another photo in which represented a house that is for sale. Again, I drew this with only three colors (which the exception of white and grey)
This graph I drew in Adobe Illustrator depicted the benefits of Gentrification, as it showed a gradual reduction of homicides in the city of East Palo Alto through 1992-2016.
This is the last photo I used. I took it out in my street and was a background image to complement my works cited page.

Final Magazine

How I created these Images

Adobe Indesign

My final product was assembled in the program Adobe Indesign. I recently had a change to learn it through Digital Media and Design classes and these skilled helped me develop a final product.

Adobe Illustrator

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator, a program I had learned a while back during the Narrative project. These next two photos were also drawn using Adobe Indesign.

Magazine

In Digital Media we also produced a Magazine, similar to the one produced in our Design class. It is shown below.

Conclusion

Thank you for visiting my website. This has been my documentary unit, a unit I spent a lot of time on and learned so much from. Thank you.
