The Humor Project is pretty self-explanatory– it’s a project in which we create a comedic work. My English teacher said we’re doing it as a break from the serious and often somber subject matter from the previous units and I couldn’t agree with this decision more. I’m glad we did this project because it’s a break from the English class norm; it’s a chance to explore different mediums often unexplored in high school class. I’m glad I was able to express my more fun-side with this project because I feel like it cn often get lost with regular academic work. I do think I am somewhat funny, so it was interesting to actually try fleshing it out into a polished piece of work. I appreciated the different genres of comedy I was exposed to during the process as it did inspire my comedy project. I think if anything, I will consider making more professional humor works in the future.

Hello friends. Thank you for joining me on this Earthly plane for the 5th annual Poetry Jam. (small cymbal) My name is Arizona and I’m a Pisces. This is my assistant, Mitch. (pause) This is my very first live performance, so please send me positive energy during this spiritual journey through the world of spoken art. I reached enlightenment during the writing process, so I hope I’ll be able to take you there too. Let us begin.
(chimes)

“Heartbreak”

My first love was fire: passionate, yet fleeting. (Small cymbal)

I was a moth to his flame,
a child seeking warmth on a crisp autumn day,
a rich person watching a burning pile of cash…

He taught me how to love. (Small chime)

There I laid,
bare on the cave’s floor,
Trapped.
No light from yonder
Black in an infrared.
The absence of human touch

I shuddered (chimes)
And blinked an SOS
In hopes someone would blink back. (Multiple cowbells)

(Go ham on the instruments) Seconds turned into minutes,
Minutes turned into hours,
Hours turned into days…
To weeks
To months
Years
Decades
Centuries
Light years
something more than light years?

Until he flickered back, (soft drumming)
Forcing my eyes open.
I squinted at the white, thinking it was a dream
For light only entered in my sleep.

He offered refuge in his heat,
Genuine compassion I’ve never experienced before.
I stumble towards the light
Defrosting as I go
Like a hot pocket in the microwave. (triangle)

Out of the numbing dark,
My life now in technicolor.
He saved me,
And I spent the next few months in his warmth

But it (drum crescendo) all changed when the clock stroke twelve on the eve of his birth.
I unearthed something that truly shook me to the core
Like a vibrator during an earthquake
Something that threw me back inside of that vapid cave… (cymbal)

He was a Gemini (triangle)

But I was a Pisces. (cowbell)

Just like a twelve-year-old boy who got in trouble for maxing out his mother’s credit cards on loot boxes,
I wept.
And wept and wept and wept.
Because this relationship couldn’t work (cowbell)

Shouldn’t work (higher drum)

Wouldn’t work (lower drum)

For it isn’t in the stars. (cymbal)
Tragedy was predetermined for us,
Shoving a fateful wedge in between.
We were like Romeo and Juliet,
Bonnie and Clyde,
Justice and the United States–
It wouldn’t work out. (cowbell)

His fireplace words tried to calm my ocean heart (chimes)
Saying things like, (start of drumming)
“What?
I don’t see why something like birth dates could drive us apart.”

(comedic drum noise)

…how naive.

(Drumming) Such words made separation more difficult
For I loved him too. (large cymbal)
But he was such an ignorant,
Unknowing soul
Of the stars.
A doubter
left in the dark of the starless sky. (triangle)

(Shark bait oo haha drumming) “No… really. I don’t think something like the zodiac could predict our future together… we don’t need to break up over this… For God’s sake, (drum pause) I love you…” (cowbell)

Classic Gemini move.

So me,
With courage and fishiness,
Took a final gulp
And flopped away from the fire

For the fish cannot be with the flame. (Small cymbal… comedic drum)
