Conceptual

Introduction

The conceptual unit is our first unit for Freestyle. This unit taught us to express ourselves in multiple different unconventional forms that we wouldn’t use on a daily basis. These project emphasizes creative risk-taking through poetry, music, art, animations, experimental film and web production, challenging students to express their opinions through a distinct personal aesthetic. We were given tools to help us express ourselves such as DSLR Cameras, Tascam Audio Recorders, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, and WordPress.

I really enjoy our first unit because I get to learn how to use all of these tools that where given to us and increasing my skill set. Learning how to properly use the DSLR Cameras, audio recorders, Photoshop, Preiere Pro, Audition was funMy personal favorite project out of all the projects I did for this unit would be the conceptual photo project in design.

Haiku

Writing a haiku (follows a 5-7-5 syllable structure rule) with a randomly generated prompt that includes an emotion and scenario is what everyone in English had to do. My concept is I am exploring the feeling of loneliness through the experience of meditating. While making the drafts for our haiku, we had to take a picture (or go find one from our photo gallery) that would go with our haiku without obviously telling the audience our prompt. After that, we have to turn it into a video with Premiere Pro in our Digital Media class. We learned how to record ourselves with a recorder and how to make and edit a video to our liking.

behind the scenes of the video editing

I actually had to redo my haiku poem because the original was a bit obvious to my prompt. I went into a bit of research about flower language and chose the one that seemed best fitted for my concept. Periwinkles have many meanings and one of its darker meanings is longing and loneliness. After that, it was an easy flow of words to fit the rest of the haiku. Personally, I had a bit of a hard time making the video because I’m not that good with editing and I sort of forgot a bit of what Mr. Flo taught us in class. After watching a bit of YouTube videos to refresh my memories in how to use Premiere Pro, I managed to create the video. I also had a bit of trouble picking what kind of music I want for the general vibe for the video since I was a bit unsure in what kind of tone I want to aim for. As you can see in the video, I ended up picking music choice eventually. All in all, I enjoy the final product even though I got a bit embarrassed when it was played in front of the class. I’m glad to become more familiar with Premiere Pro.

Alpha Name Photography

The Alpha Name Photography unit is where to expand our photography skills and learn how to use Photoshop different camera lens to get the best results for our final project. In this project, we would have to find natural and artificial objects around us that could make up the letters of our name. After that, we should edit them on Photoshop to make them gray scale and edit some parts of our photographs and corp them according to our liking.

Conceptual Photo

In this unit for Design, we would have to use our prompt from English and make create a photograph of it based off out prompt. We have to use 1 object each to show our emotion and scenario of the prompt. After we thought of our ideas and talked with each other about it to see if our idea was good, we would then start planning where and how we want how photograph to how our prompt. We would take pictures in multiple different angles and different set ups to get the results we wanted. After that, we should edit our picture on Photoshop. My prompt was “I am exploring the feeling of loneliness through the experience of meditating“.

I am exploring the feeling of loneliness when meditating.

The objects I chose for my project are a mirror and a clay moon inside a small glass full of water.  The clay moon in the glass filled with water stood for loneliness and the mirror represented mediating. This can be viewed in multiple ways but I chose a moon inside a glass filled with water to represent how some people try to hide their loneliness inside them. I used the mirror as someone who is self reflecting and the reflection of the moon in the glass is to show how the person is reflecting to themselves that they are feeling isolated from everyone. I decided to have the mirror to be more focused on than the cup because I want to show how clearly the person can sense their own loneliness. I wanted the background to be somewhat neutral but on the brighter side to set the mood of meditating. I tried to have the reflection to be a little light to show how obvious it was to the person that they are feeling lonely. The closed door in the reflection is to show the person how there is an option to fix the loneliness they are feeling but they are unable to reach there.

In Photoshop, we learned many things like how to edit a bit in raw form and that it changes the whole image, how to crop images to our liking, we learned how to flatten our images, change the hue, saturation, and value of our image, etc. I didn’t use a lot of editing as all I did was edit the raw image to try and give it an overall cool tone to the whole picture because when I think of loneliness, cool colors is what comes to mind as it’s more of a chilling feeling to have. I changed the photo a bit with the curve to make some things bright and darker to my liking.
