Conceptual

Introduction

In the conceptual unit, I was tasked to complete projects that take on creative risk-taking through using applications like Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, and photoshop to create pieces like our Art Reflection and Parody. Through using these applications and new skills, I was able to complete projects that I am proud of and be able to level up my writing skills.

Art Reflection Video

The SF MOMA Field Trip is a trip that all of freestyle takes to go to the museum to complete their English assignment. For Juniors we had to find an art piece that made us feel awe that we could write about to later create an adobe audition visual about what we wrote about how we felt about the piece. The project taught me how to describe what I am seeing in the art piece and how to use adobe audition at a much higher skill.

I had a good time finding music, adding my photos, creating a voice over, and using Adobe Audition to create my Art Reflection Video. I valued the skills I learned from Digital Media to take what I learned in class to apply it to my project. I also learned a lot during English in how to use descriptive words to describe how I felt about the art piece.

My process in producing the Parody Song was trying to come up with what I wanted my parody to be about. After that I figured out what was the main focus of what I wanted to “sing” in my parody due to my song being really short.

Parody Lyrics

[Verse]

I was a student in high school doin’ alright

Then I became a freestyle student overnight

Now I gotta figure out how to do my projects

So much to learn and see

At the freestyle campus with my friends and teachers

In a school that’s just for juniors and seniors

A whole opportunity has opened for me

I’m so excited to be

[Chorus]

(A freestyle student) I now have projects that are starting to pile up

(A freestyle student) trying to balance everything, it’s an adventure every day

(Freestyle student) It’s gonna be my time

(Freestyle) To show them all that I’m a freestyle student

(I’m stressed)

I wanted to choose a song that was an opening to a show, I chose to make a parody with the song that opens Sofia the first. At first, I recorded my vocals at a lower pitch, but I realized that I sounded very lifeless and wasn’t having fun while recording. When I re-recorded my vocals at a higher pitch, I was much more pleased with the results. What I found most interesting about making this parody was how many attempts it took to get a good take. With the number of times I messed up mid-recording or wasn’t satisfied with a take, it ended up taking multiple tries just to record around 60 seconds of lyrics. My message with my lyrics was about being a Freestyle student. the idea came to me at a random moment on my way home, and I had to write it down so I wouldn’t forget later. I’m most proud of how I made the song about freestyle because I think my lyrics are really funny and genuinely capture what being a Freestyle student sometimes is like.

Photoshop Blend Modes

We were given this assignment to learn about photoshops blend modes and what they do to then creatively use them. The skills we learned include things like, blending 2 photos together, darkening an image, brightening an image, and brightening specific areas of the image.

I value the new skills I received using photoshop blend modes and how I can potentially use it in the future for projects or for self use. I see myself using multiply, screen, and overlay blend mode to edit my photos because I have definitely had moments where I wished I could change the light level in my photos

DSLR Photos

During a day in class we learned about the things our DSLR cameras are able to do with its different photo taking modes. Like Av Mode with shallow and deep depth of field, Tv mode with long exposure night photography, flash practice with portraits in front of backdrops, P-mode with ISO changes, altering White Balance. The photos I have below are the Av, Tv, and flash practice photos.

I really enjoyed taking shallow depth of field photos because of how easy it was to focus on the item in the foreground. but I did have some trouble trying to get a deep depth of field photo due to my camera wanting to focus on a single item which ended up blurring everything else. I had fun with the long exposure night photography because I was able to get some cool photos with the light that we held when practicing taking the photos. I also enjoyed using the flash because I got to take photos of my friends and learn how pointing the flash changes the light and darkness on the person. Practicing changing the ISO and altering White Balance was cool seeing how different modes can make a subject look so different each time.

Design

In Design we completed projects like the Nature Name Photography and our Conceptual Photo. I learned so much in Design in this first semester like how to edit camera raw photos in photoshop, using my imagination to find things in real life that look like other things, and how to strategically capture a photo to create specific feelings. I really value all of the skills I learned so far as a Design student and the friends I have made with people in my class.

Nature Name Photography

We were tasked to capture things in nature that look like the letters in our name. The only thing we couldn’t take a picture of were man made objects. I used photoshop to create the layout of the final product and to make sure what I want be depicted is easily visible.

Conceptual Photo

For the Conceptual Photo project we picked a number that responded with a prompt. And with that prompt we were tasked to take a photo that showed each part of the prompt. My prompt was “Exploring the Feeling of Awe Through Becoming an Adult” so I had to capture the feeling of awe and something that portrayed being an adult.

In the front are baby items: a blanket, sippy cup, baby book, and diaper. Many people, when having babies, have to buy these kinds of items to welcome this new life and light into their world. I chose this group of objects because when babies come into the world, everyone who meets them feels many emotions, especially awe, when looking at the new face. In the back is a bottle of soju. One of the milestones to becoming an adult is when you are able to consume alcohol at 21. Soju is a Korean distilled spirit, and from the media I consume it is drunk with the people you feel closest to and I see it as an alcohol with a more positive connotation, compared to beer or wine. I arranged the objects in this manner because I felt it showed a transition, through the blanket, from the baby items in front to the soju that’s in the back. I specifically made the light warm and shine purely on the objects because I felt that the orange light gave a warmer energy and highlighted the items and drew your eye to the objects by having the items be the only things lit. When I think of awe I also imagine a comforting aura that I translated into a warm lighting. I first learned that you should ask for help when photographing your objects. In my first attempt, I tried holding the light by myself, but when looking at the results my objects looked like they were floating in the void. The second time around, I asked for my dads help in holding the light for me and directing him in how I wanted him to hold the light, and this allowed me to get a final product that I was happy with. I also learned how to make my picture a little sharper and use adjustment layers to add small details with the help of Photoshop. I used the things I learned to enhance the photo making the final product have warmer lighting and darker shadows that emphasized the items.
