Introduction

The Conceptual project allowed for creative risk-taking through poetry, art and web production. It challenged me to express myself and my thoughts. I got to learn how to use professional equipment and applications such as a DSLR Camera, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and more. Freestyle has allowed me to be a lot more creative with my work than I ever have before.

Haiku

For the Haiku project, we were given a concept statement that we had to use for a prompt. The prompt that I got was “I am experiencing the feeling of fear through running.” I decided to think back to 7th grade P.E. when I pushed myself a little too hard trying to be first. The picture I took was a string about to snap in half, a metaphor for putting someone under too much pressure.

“Breaking Point”

“Why Art?” Essay

For the “Why Art?” essay, we read some articles about why art matters. We also chose an artist who’s artwork had a similar theme to one of the articles. The article that I chose was “Why Get Upset When You Can Just Smile?” by Mieko Kawakami. It was about a wedding that occurred during the pandemic, and it felt a little surreal. So I picked the artist Salvador Dali, who is very famous for his surrealistic artwork. And also his mustache.

Photoshop Blend Modes

This assignment was to use the blend modes in Photoshop to edit photos. I value the blend modes because they are a helpful tool when I want to darken or brighten a photo. I see myself using the blend modes in photoshop for my creative projects to edit my photos the way I want them to look.

Design

For the Conceptual project in Design, we produced images that had to do with the same Conceptual statement we were given in english. We created the alphabet name photo and the Conceptual photo.

Alphabet Name Photo

For this project, we were told to go out and find objects like buildings or tree branches that spelled out our name.

Conceptual Photo

The Conceptual Photo was an assignment where we had to take our Conceptual statement and use objects that metaphorically explained the statement.

The objects in my photograph are a glow in the dark eyeball and a small model pair of lungs and heart. The eyeball represents fear because the feeling of being stared at brings fear and anxiety into my mind. The pair of lungs and heart represents running because when you run, your heart beats faster and more air is being sent to your lungs. The objects are in the middle of a dirt path leading into the forest. I chose this spot because it brings out the feeling of fear and the experience of running. The path which people often run on is leading into a forest, which creates a sense of eeriness.

Here are some of the other photos I took before I picked the final photo:
