Last year, I made a head out of clay. It was colored with bright colors and on one side of the face, it was covered with scars and gory features, like an eyeball hanging out of the socket. This year, I wanted to make the same head, plus shoulders, in Blender. I’ve never used Blender before, and I wanted to try it out. Mostly because of some animation students saying I should try it out. For the original project, I was inspired by other gory sketches I’ve done in the past, and the placement of the scars were inspired by the main character in the horror game, Sally Face. I don’t remember why I chose to use bright, unnatural colors for the original project, I probably just thought it might look cool. So I stuck with the same coloring.
There were many problems I ran into. I could not find the mirror tool for the longest time. I had to search it up and it turns out, it was right in front of me the whole time. Another one of the problems I ran into was the videos I used were not helpful. They didn’t tell me where any of the tools were, how to set it up, what the tools do, etc. I tried watching multiple videos, but one video said not to do something, the other said to do that exact thing. So I just taught myself. I started with a sphere and just tested out what every tool does. It was much easier after I knew what everything did. I also tried 3D printing it, and there were multiple problems with that. The file was too big, there were too many details, and the printer itself was broken. I tried anyway, but it got stuck halfway through the process. Besides all the problems, I loved using Blender. It was super fun and I will use it again. It is very easy to use and easy to learn, seeing as I taught myself pretty quickly.
