Explorations

For our explorations project we were given the task to explore and learn a new skill. We must improve on skills that is addressed on the 21 Century Skill list. This project allowed us to explore what we are passionate about and freestyle gave us the tools and opportunity to do so. This skills I chose were visual literacy and high productivity. The topic I wanted to work on was environment concept art. I knew in order to be a successful concept artist you must get an idea across to an audience, while also being able to produce several pieces rapidly. Overall I produced two final environment art pieces and created several sketches.

Process

I started my process by outlining when I want my final product to be finished and when I want each part of my project to be done. I followed this timeline in order to stay productive. I think time management is an important skill for everyone and especially artists. I first started creating sketches to come up with ideas. I first used traditional sketching methods, with just graphite. However I also used another technique by drawing silhouettes. The image above is a good example of silhouette sketching.

After the sketches I started developing my pieces in photoshop. I chose photoshop because it gave me that ability to photo bash my images. The process was slow at first, but after I started understanding key board shortcuts and what I was doing, I began improving rapidly. Below you can see how both my images start to be built up. You can see from the process, how I used photos in combination with painting in order to construct my image. I used several different techniques, including clipping masks, blending layers and layer adjustments. The most important part is that I work in a non destructive way and I can always go back and adjust any part of my process.

Final Product

These images represent everything I learned during explorations. I really enjoyed the this project and I am thinking continuing this process for my zenith project.
