Photo Narrative Illustration Projects

We began this assignment by "looking into other people." We looked at pictures of people and tried to make up traits and things that the given person could or might do, which is basically re-creating a person based on their looks. We then created our own characters and gave them traits that and hobiies that were different from ours. This is where we began to create our stories using these characters we made or characters similar to them. After you read this story, try watching my animation and see how closely related it is to my story.

Fires Of Knowlage

Enduring the cold weather, he continued forward with his hand in a pocket and a book in the other. Eager to reach the end of the path, he dashed along the early trail. Suddenly, a building appeared. Its tall brick walls, its many glossy windows, this was it, the famous Library of the campus, but something was amiss. Straining to see the library, he came across a bright light light , seeming to dance with joy. A fire

After having worked for years, doing what ever job he could take on, David was finally able to join the college of his dreams. He had the grades, and the potential the college was looking for, but he had needed was the money, but not anymore. As soon as he gathered the amount that was needed, he registered himself as a student of the college, hopped in a car, and drove there.

Having just arrived, David took a quick glance at his surroundings. Evergreen trees were everywhere, along with multiple dirt path that laid underneath them. Even though it was winter, the green of the trees and their fallen needles seemed to emphasize the paths. The paths all began at a single map posted directly in front of him. The map described where each of the trails would take him; path 1 leading to administration, path 2 to the dorms, path 3 to the cafeteria, and .......there it was, path 4! David, ignoring his belongings, zoomed off along path 4 with only a book in hand.

After what seemed to be an eternity, a building came into sight. Its towering brick walls, carefully placed within the dense trees, seemed to be an act of god to David. The sight, along with the sole dream of being able to come to such a place, encouraged David to do his best in order to be apart of this college. The thought of being able to just be this close to the school's library made David shiver with excitement. This Library was deemed one of the best ones in the United States, which meant a lot to David, since his life revolved of books. His hobbies, jobs, dreams, all consisted of books and the books he could possibly be reading.

Quickening his pace, he rushed towards the the Library with such speed that anyone would have thought he was a stray dog chasing a squirrel. Suddenly, David began to feel massive amounts of heat as he neared the Library's entrance. Passing through the last row of trees, he stared in utter horror as he saw a group of students, piles of books, and a large bonfire stationed directly in front of this heavenly place.

Shocked by the scene, he waited for a couple seconds to observe what was happening, hoping that he was just jumping to conclusions. A couple of students were adding to the fire, while a few went inside the library, soon coming out with more books. David began to panic and started looking for the nicest looking person he could find. The person he found was a tall female with long, straight brown hair. A pretty average looking girl, at least for him. He tapped on her shoulder, causing her to swing around, and asked what was going on.

"You don't know?" replied the girl.

"I just arrived here so not really."

"Ah I see, welcome then! I'm Kelly"

"Great.. so whats going on? I must be mistaken but it looks like your burning books."

"We are, we're tying to protest."

She explained that school was trying to promote a large amount of historians and scientists by purchasing their books and using them as the schools new standard textbooks, but because the majority of the authors were biased and racist, many of the students were against the transition.

"So you see, we're only going to burn the books if they don't agree." she replied casually.

David began to get enraged. Not only was he completely against the students point of views, but the fact that this girl was so casual about the burning of such a thing set him off.

"Are you **** mad! Don't you have any respect for these books! People put their heart and souls into making these books, and you your going to burn them because you don't like them!" spouted David angrily.

"Whoa chill out, it's just a bunch of stupid books with faulty information. Trust me, you wouldn't like these book either."

"That's not the point! Each book still holds different knowledge and perspectives. If you give them a chance...."

He was quickly cut off by an new voice that seemed to boom for miles.

    "Attention everyone attention!"

A slender male, who seemed to pop out of nowhere, rushed towards the fire with a megaphone. He placed the giant amplifier toward his mouth and began to speak.

"The chairman refuses to admit that what he did was wrong and refuses to get better books, you know what that means!"

All people around David, who use to be busy with what ever they were doing, began to chant. It started off slowly, but continued to get louder and louder as more people joined in. David was horrified as to what they were saying. All of them, almost in perfect unison were shouting "Burn the books, burn the books!" This demonic cry frightened David, causing him  to immediately sprint up to and throw himself the only thing he cared for, the massive pile of books; protecting it from the the gathering crowd of demons.

"What the hell do you think you are doing?"

    "What's he doing?"

"Does he want to get burned too?"

The voices echoed in his head but he remained still, continuing to protect the pile of books as if it were a weakened angel. More people began to gather, yelling and kicking David, desperately attempting to get him off.

"They can't start if they can't get at the books. "David thought to himself, letting out a small sigh of relief. Out of the corner of his eye however, he saw people beginning to pull books away from their pile of brethren. David jolted up and rushed over to them, knocking the books out of their crude hands. He rushed over to the the immense bonfire and shouted:

"If you want to burn these precious books, you're going to have to burn me with them!"

Everyone quickly froze as a silence blew over the crowd. Time seemed to stop, until some fool in the back attempted to restart the chant. Slowly but surely, more people began to join in as they grabbed the books and headed towards David.

"Burn the books, burn the books!"

David began shaking, wondering if it was the end for him.

"If I'm going down, at least I'm going down with what I love." he silently wispered to himself.

Unfortunately for him, he continued to shake, since the chants sheer power overcame his own thoughts.

    "Ummm attention every one attention."

Another loud speaker began to boom from the path leading from administration. This time, though, it seemed to have less motivation behind it.

"Attention, please ignore the previous announcement about the chairman refusing to throw out the books. Umm, our representative left before the chairman was finished. It has been decided that the books will not be removed, but other books will brought in and made into the standard text book."

Cheers arouse from the crowd as they all leaped happily up and down, completely ignoring their previous intent. David collapsed down to his knees with a sign of relief. Kelly stopped cheering with everyone else and began walking towards David, kneeling down in front of him.

"Pretty risky move you tried to pull there, are you alright?"

"I'll be fine, does that mean the books won't be burned?"

    "Yup, pretty much."

She helped David to his feet and they both rejoiced with the rest of the crowd.
